To gauge your artsy-fartsy threshold for judging movies.
Acting was great, characters and development was great.
But to me, it just didn't go anywhere. I'm more of an adventure, action, drama fan so I guess it's just subjective but I kept waiting, hoping for something to happen.
Perhaps I was expecting something different.

The trailer looked interesting.. I started a streaming copy and it buffered and I paused and never started it back up.
I'll follow this thread and if it trends upward and if it does, I'll revisit.

It got too cute with the ending.
I loved the pacing. Felt the pacing was almost a character. I could really feel his desperation to make it work.
Stone was great in that scene where she destroys him, then realizes she went too far.
Not sure how anyone was expecting more. A quick synopsis of the movie tell you all you need to know.
All of the actors were top notch. God I hated that pompous bitch critic. She needed Atia of the Julii to take her down another peg.

It was really unique right up until the ending which made no sense, and wasn't earned in any way.

I am still not sure what to make of the ending and how it affects my overall opinion of the movie, but I really enjoyed the rest of the movie.

I was a big fan of the "one long, continuous shot" style it had going on. The ending was fine. One of the better movies of last year.

Sounds like you were hoping for more of the same.

right there with you
maybe I just didn't get it, but it just felt like so much work for who knows what
liked the continuous shot idea, but the jazz score was overdone and really distracting
what the hell was the point of getting Mike together with the daughter? That was a lot of glib conversation we watched for seemingly no reason

Probably one of my favorite scenes last year. Birdman & Whiplash both have extraordinary acting performances.

It's like a chick you date and you feel like you're supposed to like her more but you just don't. Kinda.

I don't get how people think it went nowhere or nothing happened. What would you have preferred to see happen?

Birdman is the only movie I've ever seen besides Highlander where, during my first viewing, I found myself eagerly anticipating scene transitions.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (Gary Oldman version) had some pretty good transitions as well...but didn't really grab me the first time through in the same way.

I don't either, and this type of criticism is becoming very prevalent on this board. This was a character driven movie and plenty happened with Michael Keaton's character. That is something happening. Are people going into every movie now expecting this epic action/adventure story?

The ending was purely figurative and made perfect sense.
Are you serious, Clark?

I thought I was clear that I don't really fault the movie, it is what it is and has many great things.

I watched Birdman last night.
I thought it was good. Very well acted and I liked the story. Like many movies, the ending didn't suit me, but I'm used to that.
In my artsy-fartsy threshold for judging movies, I think it was a very good movie. Exponentially better than most of the crap movies that are green-lighted and made today. The story captures that. Michael Keaton as lead nails it for RL and in the film.

I'm willing to listen to any theory you have that would sell me on the ending.

It's funny how some people are 100% certain of the ending.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
1. He dies on the stage. This makes no sense but some people are positive this is what happens and the hospital scene is the final pistons firing in his brain.
2. He survives but dies after jumping out the window. I don't buy this at all. Why would his daughter not freak out if he is dead on the street? The people who believe this theory claim she snapped upon seeing him dead and entered the same style of fantasy life that he was living. Her brain tried to protect her by making her think he was flying.
3. Same as he did the whole movie, he thinks he is using his birdman powers but in real life he is climbing up a fire escape. This is the most plausible explanation. We already saw him jump once before and he didn't die.
4. The Being There Theory. No longer tethered by the weight of his doubts, he actually flies away similar to Chauncey walking on water.

What I love is how CERTAIN people are about the ending. Sure.

My take:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
IMO: You end this movie with him on stage giving the final monologue with the gun in his hand. Done.
I would have cut the scene of him putting bullets into the gun and the drowning dream discussion. It was already building up to a does he kill himself opening night scenario.
Being a character driven story, it should have just faded to black. Shooting nose off, disappearing through hospital window, daughter looking into sky with surprise - all unnecessary.
That's my only issue with the movie. Otherwise, I thought it was a very good story with well developed characters. Not every movie needs some twist ending, just let it be. IMO.
SPOILERS....SPOILERS...SPOILERS....
That's the closest thing to what I believe the director/writer wants it to be portrayed as, but it's just weak. The movie is squarely in our world, and then he's just gonna go and visibly fly off? Sure, ok...why not.
