I think that would be How Green Was My Valley winning over Citizen Kane. That's just my opinion, however.

Yep. It gets harder as I go farther back in time because I have seen fewer and fewer of the movies that were nominated in those years. Still a good amount of "bad calls" in the last 20 years though to have a decent conversation about

I've never seen "How Green Was My Valley" so I can't really comment on this one.

You remember how I said Shakespeare in Love was still a solid movie? How Green Was My Valley wasn't a solid movie. The controversy over Citizen Kane was too great for them to award it anything other than screenplay and How Green Was My Valley had the John Ford factor. The Academy had a boner for Ford in those days.

American Beauty over The Green Mile...

My hatred of American Beauty is legendary, but even I think it's better than the Green Mile, which is easily Tom Hanks' worst movie. Bachelor Party is a better movie. Dragnet 85 is a better movie. The Green Mile is a painfully awful film. So awful that even American Beauty, a movie I deeply loathe, is better than it.

I will now point out Fight Club came out the same year. As did Being John Malkovich.

I have never seen this movie. Evidently, it doesn't exist on Blu Ray. Maybe it's worth buying my first DVD in 5 years?

Joe Vs The Volcano?

Just curious and not to derail too much but why do you hate the Green Mile so much?

And, yes, Fight Club is miles better than American Beauty as well

2002 - Chicago over Gangs of New York, LOTR2, The Pianist

Only The Pianist was better than Chicago to me. Gangs of New York is very overrated IMO.

Disagree. American Beauty > > > The Green Mile, IMO

1998 - Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan and Life is Beautiful

Any person with half a brain considers SPR a better movie; I have no idea how the Academy could miss this one.

1997 - Titanic over Good Will Hunting and LA Confidential

I may be in the minority, but I actually think the Academy got this one right. All three are great movies, but I think Titanic edges the other two.

I'm an Out of Africa fan, but The Color Purple was the better movie of the two.

The Color Purple received the biggest snow job in Oscar history. It received the most nominations of any film that year, but Spielberg failed to get a Best Director nomination despite winning the Directors Guild Award for Best Director. What's worse...the film went 0/11 on Oscar night.

Don't speak ill of Joe v. the Volcano! That's, no joke, one of my favorite movies.

I hate the Green Mile because it's essentially a lesser version of the Shawshank Redemption only with more Magical Negro. It's like proclaiming the greatness of the Go-Bots, which were clearly just a cheap Transformers knock-off.

I think Chicago sucked out loud so agree to disagree on that one

To me AB is one of the worst movies to ever win the award

In cinematography and special effects, Titanic kicked every other movies' arse that year. However, GWH and LAC are far surperior movies to this teenage love story.

It's been said on here many times, but Shakespeare In Love in 1998 is a head scratcher.

Agree. I think Saving Private Ryan or American History X should have won that year.

1997 was just an awesome year for movies. IIRC correctly, Boogie Nights and Donnie Brasco were also released in 97.

Conversely, 2005 (and many years since 2003) was a weak as frick year for movies. So Crash was just like the smartest retard that year.

Both great movies. You could give it to either of them.
