Best Picture Oscars that shouldn't have won..

So with the Academy awards coming up, do some of their choices leave you scratching your head?
For reference: Academy Award for Best Picture
2005 - Both Munich and Capote were much better than Crash
1997 - Titanic...Are you kidding me? Not a great year for films, but even The Apostle (which wasn't nominated) was much better than this teenage chick flick.
1996 - Fargo was much more interesting than The English Patient. Coen brothers at their best.
1979 - Apocalypse Now and Breaking Away over Kramer vs. Kramer. What were they thinking?

It's been said on here many times, but Shakespeare In Love in 1998 is a head scratcher.

100% disagree on both counts. Titanic, LA Confidential, As Good as it Gets, Good Will Hunting, and The Full Monty is as solid of a lineup as you can get.

Agree, I love Good Will Hunting but ill admit it. I thought titanic was great. Some good movies that year.

quote:No they weren't, and Infamous was much better than Capote. I don't know who PSH was playing in that movie, but it wasn't Truman Capote. I think he was portraying the role of "douchebag who wants an Oscar."

quote:Agree. James Cameron has clearly sold his soul to Satan, because the top two grossing films of all time are total pieces of shite.

quote:Quite correctly, that those films were leaps and bounds better. Proof? I've been a member of this site for 6 years and this is the first time I've ever even seen anyone mention fricking Kramer v. Kramer.

And any "undeserving Academy Award winner list" that doesn't include Shakespeare In Love is invalid on its face.

Look at the 'Pool of Death' in 1989:
Driving Miss Daisy*
Born on the Fourth of July
Dead Poets Society
Field of Dreams

I personally would have given the Oscar to Munich in 2005 if it had been left up to me.

Yup, that's the worst in my opinion.

Strongly disagree. I'm not saying you are one of these people, but many of the haters of Shakespeare in Love have never even seen the movie. I was one of those particular haters for an awfully long time. I refused to see the film that beat out Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture.
When I finally saw it, however, I was stunned at just how excellent the film was. I still regard Saving Private Ryan as the far better film, the film that should have won Best Picture. But Shakespeare in Love was hardly the worst film to ever win Best Picture. It's a solid film.

I've seen it, it was a solid film, but it was no Saving Private Ryan. It wasn't even as good as Life Is Beautiful.

He's not saying it's the worst film to ever win, he is saying it's the worst oversight if you will
