Deadspin: What If The New Star Wars Sucks, Too?
Not saying I agree with the author, but he does make some interesting points. However, it's a bit unfair to compare this movie and JJ Abrams's involvement to Lucas's prequels.
I know it's old hat to gripe about the prequels, but holy crap does he bring back some bad memories.

Here is the problem. Most of the Star Wars movies are not good, but bad. Betting on this one to be good—to be the best movie of all time—is betting against the trend. The overall mean grade of the six existing Star Wars films is, like, a D.
Of those six, two (the original Star Wars, plus The Empire Strikes Back) are unqualified classics. Three others (the prequels) are among the worst films ever to receive wide theatrical release. That brings us to the sixth, Return of the Jedi, the one nearest to The Force Awakens in the narrative chronology. I am very sorry to say that Return of the Jedi is butt.
Sure, it contains around an hour or so of terrific, visually spectacular space-fantasy adventure. Unfortunately, this space-fantasy adventure shares its running time with nearly 80 minutes of embarrassing bullshite. Here I am referring to: the too-long-by-half Jabba the Hutt sequence at the beginning, which tries and fails to recapture the sleazy fun of Mos Eisley; the excruciating scene in which a visibly embarrassed Alec Guinness delivers a block of exposition revealing Obi-Wan Kenobi to be the most hapless doofus who ever lived; what only feels like a month of intolerable Ewok nonsense; and more.

Yea, you can't compare it to the prequels at all.. I can't imagine that it will suck. Surely JJ/Disney have heard the complaints from the fans about the prequels.

Revenge of the sith is an awesome movie and brings everything together. Writer is dead wrong there..

No, it's still total crap.
However, the writer is wrong about Return of the Jedi. It's not perfect, but it's still a fun/good movie.

Anybody who watched the documentaries knows Lucas went full blown control freak on 1-3. They have enough source material where a decent director should be able to produce at least an average movie.

Hayden Christensen was horrendously bad as Anakin in the prequels. And the writing was pretty bad as well.
I don't think this one will be quite that bad.

The return of the Jedi is not as consistently good as empire but I'll argue all day that there are parts that are better than anything in empire. The 3 way interwoven battle at the end was brilliantly done. When I watched it recently, the worst thing about it was Harrison ford very obviously didn't want to be there.

Of course they have. There's more than enough resources on the internet to have a research team find out what people like about the originals, what they hate about the prequels, and how to make the sequels the best they can be using that info.
Hell, all they really have to do is watch Mr. Plinkett's reviews of the prequels and listen to everything he says.

say what you will about JJ but:
JJ>>>>Lucas
JJ>>>>Lucas

The cottage industry of Star Wars bashing has really run its course.
First, it was Jar Jar, who we all agreed on. Then it was the dialogue between Anakin and Princess Sparcles...well yeah. Next, all of the sequels were just completely terrible. Whatever.
But now, with prequal bashing played out, they've moved on to the original series. You didn't like the Jaba's palace scenes? Obi Wan was a dufus? How 'bout go frick yourself and keep your poop-smeared pudgy fingers off my childhood.
I like how the Internet has turned everyone into hardcore, serious critics of film and TV, expecting adventure movies to stir the soul and fully diagnose the human condition. They're the couch potato equivalent of Yelpers.

3,4,5 and 6 are all great. Phantom Menace was terrible, yes. No argument there, only good part was the Darth Maul fight. 2 was ok, not great. The clones vs separatists battle was decent. I'll agree 4 and 5 as wholes were better than 6, but not by a lot. I loved some of the parts he hated

Just because you can reduce everything to a formula after the fact does not mean you can take a formula and make something worth a shite. Some people just don't get that.

I just read the whole thing. Wow. Is this author 14 years old?

Just bc it's marginally better than the 2 preceding it doesn't make it awesome, or even good for that matter.

Empire strikes back is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Lucas wasn't the director nor did he write the screenplay.
Here again, we have a great director not named Lucas, and Kasdan is back cowriting the screenplay.
This movie is going to kick arse.

Return of the Jedi is great. For all the talk of Ewoks, we never hear anything about the extended scenes with the Emperor as well as legitimately interesting dialogue between DV and Luke.
The most goosebumps scene of the entire franchise is Vader's funeral pyre. The music and all elements are masterfully done.
