In the process of justifying my position on that issue in the other thread, I wonder if theres any correlation between your opinion and whether you have any brothers or sisters. In this thread, answer the following questions:
1. Do you have any siblings?
2. Are you the oldest/youngest/middle?
3. Do you think Dottie dropped it on purpose?

Heres mine.
1. Yes
2. Oldest
3. She dropped it on purpose.

I'm willing to bet most oldest siblings think she did, and most younger siblings think she didn't

1) Yes
2) Youngest
3) No

#3, here's why. Being the youngest, my older brother never let me win at anything. ANYTHING. And as an adult i'm glad he didn't. It would have made it not earned and would have cheapened the victory.

What would Dottie be teaching her by letting her win? Besides that...Kit knows her. She would have known if she did it on purpose.

One sibling.
I'm the youngest.
She dropped it on purpose.

Fellow youngest siblings, no one is arguing that Kit wasn't trying her hardest or that this takes away from her accomplishments. But remember the first time you beat your brother in a game of one-and-one? He was trying, but he didn't mind if he lost. You did. That was the difference.

i'm a brother (middle)

i think the question is more related to your place in certain hierarchies. for example, i have let people win games and other competitions often in my life to keep the social peace. sometimes you just know that you are better and knowing you're better doesn't require you to actually win, and it's better to "make friends and influence people" to let them win.

I would never intentionally lose to one of my siblings. Especially on that stage.

I didn't want to start a separate thread for this, but it fascinates me that a chick flick is by far the most discussed film on the MTV board year-in year-out

I'm the youngest with an older brother by 3 years. By the time I was 10, I was kicking his arse at everything. He was a lot like Kit, wanted it, just didn't have the natural talent.

Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. I would have too.

The story is about Dottie, she is and always will be better. It was ALWAYS up to her. Kit suddenly overcoming her at the very end make zero sense. It was never about Kit. It's more real life than the underdog story. The underdog usually DOES NOT win, which is true in this case.

Don't see how people see it otherwise. If Kit overcomes Dottie it makes it just another underdog movie overcoming adversity. It's way more powerful watching Dottie "let go".

exactly

i remember playing the video game columns with the family and figuring out ways to straight up dominate. often that would involve waiting for the family to do something so that when i acted, they would be exposed and my victory was more certain. HOLY shite did this cause some drama.

so what did i do? i started losing to them. at first i had to make it seem REAL close/competitive, and then i could win some and lose some, and then eventually i just lost most of the time until i stopped playing. i didn't care but tehy REALLY cared about beating me.

in little league i once got yanked from a game (where we were leading) because i pitched very easy to a little kid who was terrible. i was one of the better pitchers and it meant a whole lot to that kid and his family to get on base. coached flipped out. i told him why i did it. i was yanked from the game. that dick voted against me making all stars that year, too

A game of one on one or video games with the family is a lot different than game 7 of the world series of women's baseball.

Plus those aren't team sports.

Dottie gave zero fricks. It wasn't in her DNA.

I'll be honest, I haven't actually watched this movie in years... I never even considered that she dropped it on purpose until this board came around. Looking back, I think it would cheapen the entire movie if she just let Kit win in the end.

Go watch the movie again. The movie is Dotties movie. Its about her life.

Letting the ball go is a symbol of her letting baseball and her competitive nature go and putting Kit first.
