No Hartman? The man was known as the Glue for a reason, and everyone in the cast agreed he was the single most important member of the cast.

Off the top of my head (in no order):
Will Ferrell
Phil Hartman
Dana Carvey
Adam Sandler
Kristen Wiig
Molly Shannon
Bill Murray
Eddie Murphy
Mike Meyers
Andy Samberg
David Spade
Darrell Hammond
Update: Kevin Nealon (best one by far IMO, but rarely do people agree with me there)
12 is tough, but I made my list on people that I like/want to see, as well as people who are taltented and can carry the show (or sketches by themselves if necessary). People like Ferrell, Wiig, Carvey, etc.
Also, some hating on Kristen Wiig, when she's one of the best females the show has ever had and was very versatile IMO.
Forgot hosts. If I had to pick one, I'd prolly go Jim Carrey. But Alec Baldwin, Justin Timberlake, and John Goodman are all great choices.
How bout I go Jim Carrey as host and Timberlake as musical guest (that way he could be in skits too if need be).

yeah i realized at that part i'd had three impressionists hammond, carvey, ahd hartman but no way i can leave hartman off for versatility sake. hammond is probably the best impressionist the show ever had and carvey is somewhere in the middle of those two.

Yeah, it came down to Hartman and Hammond for me. Both are great (and Hammond is the better impressionist, maybe the GOAT on the show).
ETA: matter of fact, I'm taking off Akroyd and replacing him with Hammond.

I can't believe I've only seen Chase and Nealon on this list once.
And no Sandler.

If we're talking about hosts, I'll always get kicked in the head for this, but one of my all time favorites, one that makes me laugh the most, is Charles Barkley. Is he good? No. Does he entertain the shite out of me? Absolutely.

Dude, it's just really hard to narrow it down to 12. There have been way more than 12 awesome cast members to come through SNL.
Hell, one guy I really struggled with leaving off hasn't even been mentioned once (I don't think)--Jon Lovitz

Chevy Chase was only on one season, and he wasn't even the MVP of that season. I trade him for Bill Murray every single time. Heck, Joe Piscopo was a better SNL player than Chase (Piscopo gets a bad rap, he carried the show for a year).
Nealon is great, but he just gets lost in those loaded 80s casts. You have to have Hartman, Carvey is the best impressionist, Lovitz was even more insane... just some great years there. Someone has to get cut.

Some of these lists are just the SNL HOF without regard for actually putting a show together
but it is an ensemble and too many dominant personalities and the show just won't work
That is why I left off Myers, Sandler, Fallon and Farley
