Rules: You get 12 members from any era of SNL and they're all in their prime and not old. You also get an additional Weekend Update anchor. Here would be mine:

John Belushi
Bill Murray
Eddie Murphy
Will Ferrell
Kristen Wiig
Tracy Morgan
Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Dan Aykroyd
Andy Samberg
Mike Meyers
Chris Farley
Weekend Update: Norm MacDonald

Go!

Solid list, but you're short on female talent. Unless of course, you just plan on putting the guys in drag anytime you have a skit with more than one woman.

I'd sub in an Amy Pohler/Tina Fey/Ana Gasteyer/Mya Rudolph for one of your cast members (not sure who though)

ETA: I also think you need another impressionist (Bill Hader/Darrell Hammond)

If I needed another female, it would be Gilda Radner

In no particular order:

Jimmy Fallon
Bill Hader
Will Ferrell
Chris Farley
Tina Fey
Jason Sudeikis
Kristin Wiig
Andy Samberg
Dan Aykroyd
Phil Hartman
Will Forte
Maya Rudolph

I tend to like the cast members that break character a lot. Find it a whole lot funnier

Have that well covered with the best impressionist they've ever had: Dana Carvey.

You're a sucker for nostalgia, aren't you?

But yeah, Gilda was pretty freaking awesome.

Also, I'd like to break the rules and add one extra category: Writer. This could be totally non-performer, or someone who is knows for a little of both. In any case, you can't have the magic of Norm at the desk nor the best political stuff SNL has ever done without the great Jim Downey.

Not a bad idea. Tough call. And it would depend on whether we're rating them based on what they produced specifically for SNL or if it's based on how awesome we think they'd be if we're just putting them in the game in their prime. Because if it's the latter, the answer has to be Larry David.

She was never all that funny to me. I'd put Poehler, Radner, and Curtin above her pretty easily.

Really I'd say the only member that should without question be on everyone's list is Phil Hartman. If you don't have Phil Hartman on your list, then you haven't watched much SNL.

a lot of you are going to have a very tough time writing sketches with no female talent.

Monty Python never had a problem with that.

12 is too many in my opinion. Always feels like the show struggles when they're trying to fit too many people on in a given night.

I'll keep it to 8 with Norm on the Update desk. Also going to try and have a cast that at least resembles typical demographics.

Phil Hartman
Dana Carvey
John Belushi
Bill Murray
Bill Hader
Kate McKinnon
Eddie Murphy
Molly Shannon

Harder than I thought. Tough to leave out Ferrell, Wiig, Sandler, Farley, etc. etc. Actually thought about putting Tim Meadows in over Murphy for the token black guy spot if only because I'd fear Murphy would still end up overshadowing the entire cast (even Belushi). SNL Murphy was a tour de force and absolutely carried the show when he was on; not sure how well he'd fit when he wouldn't have the ability to be the one and only star.

ETA: If writers are being included I guess I'd pick Robert Smigel. Though so much talent has come through that show it's super hard to pick.
