I didn't think we were going old school.
Grant carries everything, - that's why they call them "Cary Grant movies" - he's the entire movie, stories were flimsy...more so same with Wayne.
Wayne in probably GOAT in carrying films...and just below him is Hanks.
Wayne could have the worst script and story and his screen presence makes it all better. Hanks doesn't have that level...and that's a fair criticism.

Gene Hackman is the definition of the OP. Monologue in Unforgiven exhibit A.

Hackman is a solid addition to this list.
I'd put Kevin Spacey in here too.
Agree John Wayne was a presence on film but I do recall a move in which he played Genghis Khan he was awful in. Maybe it was the Mongol make-up and the script but Wayne couldn't pull that one out of the shitter.

I can't believe Cary Grant and/or George Clooney haven't been mentioned yet.
I've never seen a bad Cary Grant movie.
I should have included Clooney for sure. You're right about Cary Grant, but he's dead and never coming back. Another old guy that was amazing in his prime is Sean Connery.

True, but OP didn't specify "living."

Oddly enough Dwayne The Rock Johnson
This was the first one that popped into my head. I would have never thought even just a year ago, but I really do enjoy him in everything these days. No clue how he'd really do in a drama, though he's not bad in Ballers, but at the rate he's going he'll be getting his chance in the next few years. For now, if it's action or comedy, he's the man as far as I'm concerned.

any actor can carry a film as long as the story/script is solid.
