Interesting

Imagine being the coach. Ugh.

I learned the basics watching mlb, listening to games on radio

Played from toddler on. Stick ball pre school. Hardball first grade. Stick ball is opposite of tee ball. Broom handle and small rubber ball.

Something is way off in the situation you described.

Pitching coach being obvious glaring need.

Thanks for contributing. If you would have read it, you know that none of the kids showed any visible signs of enjoying themselves. It really was a weird vibe. I was not the only person making these comments at the ball park. Plenty of others made similar remarks. I'll make sure to get there info so you can pass on your douchebag comment.

You're gonna get a lot of hate in this thread, but you're not wrong, and what you described is one of the reason travel sports exist.

I watch my 10 year old cousin all of the time. They have just as much knowledge or more about baseball as me at that age. Your nephew just needs a new league

Holy shite some of you guys need to get laid. News flash, you weren't that good at baseball when you were 9-10 either. Some of those kids play bc their parents make them. They will grow up to do something diffrent in life, it will be ok. Kids today have more options than kids 10-20 yrs ago. Kids that are competitive with ball are on the road doing travel ball. Now go crack a beer and get ready for the soup tonight.

You sound very familiar with this topic.

By the way, you didn't attend a "sporting event" - you watched 9-10 yr. old CHILDREN playing a GAME for FUN.

The OP reminds me of a quote Orioles manager Buck Showalter made about why baseball isn't as popular with the youth as other sports are. Showalter said something to the effect of "Little League and High School baseball coaches have their players just standing in the outfield shagging flyballs for two hours. Why would kids want to do that instead of playing sports like football and basketball and lacrosse and soccer where they can run around and have fun? The coaches should let the kids play shortstop and catch and play all of the positions in the field so they can enjoy playing the game instead of being bored standing still out in the outfield for two hours."

that's cause they know they'll get a free coke after the game.

and then a participation trophy and a pizza party at the end of the year.

at least that's how we did it at my ball park.

I still remember going off on s kid in the dugout during a game. I was 11 and our team was losing. The kid said it didn't matter if we lost because his dad said he was going to give each player a dollar at the concession stand after the game (that's? what we did after a game back then, a parent would take turns buying the kids concessions after the game. 50 cents was standard. This high rollers day was going to put up a dollar per kid, win or lose.). I was so pissed.

That loser washed out. Didn't play another season. Probably living in government housing somewhere today.

Some kids want to get better, compete, and play hard. This is why I don't have a problem with travel ball. The issue I do have with travel ball is it should be based on merit, not on some rich arse MFer buying his unathletic kid's way on to the team.
