I watched my nephew's 9-10 baseball game this week. Good lord was that the most unbearable 2 hours of sporting action. I actually watched the game before his and it was equally as bad. I know this topic is discussed a lot, but I find it's more so talking about the insane parents. The kids have zero knowledge of baseball. No situational awareness (bases loaded=force at any base, runner on third less than two outs=check runner at third before making a throw). I get that this is the first year that they actually pitch, but goodness they couldn't get the ball to the plate without bouncing it in or lobbing it over, and probably 12 batters were hit (in 3 innings, I'll get to this later). If there was a runner on first, they stole second every single time and not once a throw from the catcher. The batting, I don't even need to say anything, there were 2 actual base hits, both by the kid who was head and shoulers better than any other kid on the field. I understand the lack of ability, but the coaches should have been teaching them the fundamentals at this age. where to be on certain plays, knock the ball down to keep it front of you, check your runners, throwing and CATCHING. It was a constant "good job" or back pat to the kids instead of instructional coaching throughout the game. To me they focused too much on trying to give them proper pitching form (at this age simple is best, let them throw naturally) and messing with their batting stances.

They played 3 innings in 2 hours. It was a repeated walking of batters, hit batter by pitch, wild pitch, passed ball, stealing of second, third and home. It was a total lack of ability from the coaches to the 4th outfielder.

All that being said, what bothered me the most were the kids not giving a crap. None of them were interested in the game, they were all horsing around in the dugouts, some with fidget spinners, and not paying attention at all. Not one kid was upset after they lost the game. Not one time did I hear any coach or parent give corrective criticism to a player, not to yell at the kid, but to encourage them to do better.

It just bothers the crap out of me that kids today do not take the sports they play at the park home with them. It appeared as if the only time they play are for practice and the games. They all looked to only be there because their parents put them in it and did certainly did not appear to enjoy it. no chatter on the field. No excitement and no tears from any kid. I know this is a long post, but it really was tough to watch kids not have any desire to play.

Little overboard. But I agree. It's so watered down now. Stems from the parents. Kids just don't want it like they used too

I blame the iPad/tablet/iPhone generation.... kids would rather be at home playing video games.

How so? By pointing out the kids had no desire to play baseball? By pointing out the coaches, or lack their of, were not doing a good job of teaching them?

You're gonna get a lot of hate in this thread, but you're not wrong, and what you described is one of the reason travel sports exist. The parents and kids with the WGAF attitude about competing, can be weeded out, unlike organizations like Little League.

Please elaborate on why you think that?

I guess. I have always been against the travel ball teams, but I think I understand it better now.

I don't see anything wrong with what you said. Coaches don't really coach anymore from what I've seen. Not the kids' fault.

Most 9 year olds suck at baseball. It's always been that way and always will be. It more than any other sport highlights the lack of coordinated motor skills most pre-pubescent kids have.

This "old man yelling at clouds" bit is unbecoming.

Not bitching about 9 year old baseball players.

You seem to have a tough time grasping the material.

9 years old is usually first time for kids pitch. Walks to be expected.

I agree with your statement about "most". In my scenario, all but one kid, on wither team, looked like a kid who actually cared and knew the game. Growing up we had shitty players and good players on every team. There were at least enough good players to field the ball and not throw it all over the park.
