Isn't MMA just a variant of the oldest sport in history, fighting?

Variation of Pankration and if you want to get even more basic, yes, fighting. But now it is a sport.

The best bet is something already existing becomes mainstream in the US, like team handball or something.

We played this in middle school PE before I knew it was actually a sport and not something the teacher made up. After watching it in the Olympics, I'd like to see more. The alley-oop type scoring is pretty awesome.

really?

Where I'm from we were taught handball in Elementary school and we played it all the way through Middle school. It was probably more competitive than flag football or basketball or any other sport that we played in PE. We played it All the time. It was actually pretty fricking awesome.

No joke, all of the best athletes in the school would join the handball team and we would hold like one practice per year, then compete in a this one handball tournament against all the other schools from the state who entered the tournament during the spring. You would play like 10 games in the tournament (if my memory serves correct). One time, I played a baseball double header and then headed over to play in the handball tournament. I remember this because I made two badass diving catches in Center Field in the same inning in one of those games. It kicked arse.

Everyone on our team played travel baseball or basketball or soccer or something. I missed the tournament a few times because of conflicts with my travel baseball team, but I know that some people actually skipped their games to play handball .

Our team always took first or second place in the tournament. Damn, I miss being a kid. That was some awesome shite right there.

Either Parrises squares or Pyramid is bound to happen. Or maybe Rollerball.

Is MMA really new? Fighting has been around as long as humans and MMA is just a blend of old sports.

Yes. And it is not a sport.

Now, those individuals are certainly athletes, but it is not a sport.

A sport can be played often.

Serious answer... MMA

I have nothing against MMA but I really feel like it peaked already.

It has its niche but will never break out into a major sport.

I think it's actually at a level slightly lower than the peak it reached a few years ago. I have nothing to support that except personal anecdotes and would be fine with being wrong about that.

You don't know what the definition of sport is.

I think some type of ultimate frisbee variation could become a great sport. Ultimate frisbee as it is now is fun as hell. Add in referees, some light hitting, give it a new/catchy name, and you're in business.
