will anyone ever invent a new sport that has mass appeal like basketball, football, baseball, soccer, hockey, golf, tennis

Nope. Not at least in our lifetime

It's taken 100 + years for most of the sports we enjoy to arrive where they are.

This is actually a good question. The best bet is something already existing becomes mainstream in the US, like team handball or something.

Hey team handball is fun! We played it a good bit it one of my HHP classes in college.

Yes I'm convinced Americans would love it if they were exposed to it more. High scoring, you chuck the shite out of a ball, fast paced, it would be a good spectator sport.

We played this in middle school PE before I knew it was actually a sport and not something the teacher made up. After watching it in the Olympics, I'd like to see more. The alley-oop type scoring is pretty awesome.

I'm not sure about a new sport, but I think all the concussion stuff will force football into such radical change that in 30 or so years we won't recognize it. I know parents who won't let their kids play football because of this. Unfortunately, I could easily see that trend continuing.
