Will anyone even come close?

In my opinion, although there are tougher records to beat, this one is top 5. No one will even come within 200 hits of 4000.

doubt it. If Jeter doesn't miss all of 2013, he's probably somewhere around 3,600.

Yes, injuries are a part of it. However, we just saw a guy get relatively close to that, so I think that much of a concrete statement is over the top.

And "if" he averages just 20 more hits per season, he much much closer. But he didn't.

I am not a baseball historian and don't pay much attention to numbers, but looking at his games and AB...Jeter's career was short, in comparison. That's crazy.

Mike Trout currently has 652 hits and he's only 23. Technically, he could get there around age 44 or so assuming he maintains production (HUUUUGE IF).

It's an amazing accomplishment.

700 hits away isn't really relatively close.

If Ichiro had come over when he was in his early 20's he likely would have had a chance.

Over 4,000.

ETA: But he'll just come back with "but he didn't."

Ty Cobb might have gotten to 5000 hits if there was a DH back in his day. He hit .323 his final year in the big leagues. He just couldn't play in the field any more because he was so old.

Trout and Harper have a long way to go, injuries and productivity being unknowns. But if either were to play to age 45 like Rose, they would have 3 years on him career-wise.

It's incredible to realize that someone would have to average 200 hits for 22 seasons to pass him.

The most unbreakable record in sports is Cy Young's 511 wins, because it's impossible in the live ball era.

wilt chamberlain averaged more than 48 minutes per game one season. that is more unbreakabl IMO. not even breakable in a video game.

There are a ton of actual unbreakable records in sports.

To call the MLB hit record one of them is stupid.

I could see it happening. With kids getting called up earlier now...but it'd take a lot of luck through the career.
