Palmer compared to Nicklaus is unfair. 1962 Nicklaus was like every 20something around now. NOBODY knew he was going to be "Jack". And Palmer was in the middle of his run.

shite Palmer is to golf what Mickey Mantle was to baseball. Without the beer I guess. Adding to his mystique is that he is still alive, and was ALWAYS nice. Or appeared to be. And didn't get surly in old age. Hogan was just not a nice dude. Palmer was everything Hogan was not. So people gravitated to him. Hogan would have told you to frick off!

There's a reason Arnie is called The King. His swashbuckling, go for broke approach to the game made him a fan favorite. And televised golf was in it's infancy and Arnie attracted viewers like nobody else.

All of that and he tossed me a towel on the 8th hole of the 1994 PGA Championship at Southern Hills opening round while we were on the air with TBS and I was sweating my arse off.

I will tell you why right now.

The year was 1994 and me and my father and his best friend went to the masters to watch the Monday practice round.

Palmer was playing with Jack and Ernie and we were watching behind number 9 green. Arnie had about a 40 footer downhill. While he was lining up his putt I told my dads buddy " $20 bucks he three putts"

My dads friend says "you are on. No way the king three jacks from there"

Well long story short- arnie three putts ...... he walks of the green and stops in the cross walk right in front of us and waits for his caddy to catch up with him. He then digs in his bag and takes out his wallet and hands me a $20 bill and says "no way I should have three putted from there"

I still have that bill framed in my office and have been called threeputt ever since

He came from nothing out of PA. His dad worked in the steel mills,, he wasn't a country club kid.

He had personality, played to win, played aggressive. He was the everyman.

Phil is a outgoing risk taker, pulls off crazy shots and wins or goes down in incredible flames. That is much more interesting than a straight laced "plodding" fairway and greens player.

that's it.

Good thing you didn't caddy for him. That $20 would have been your tip
