Why was Arnold Palmer so beloved by fans?

The NBC special on Nicklaus's first major was re-aired on Golf Channel today. It was mentioned that in the 1962 Open at Oakmont, the Pittsburgh crowd (in true Steeler fashion) were making noise and heckling Nicklaus while he was playing. This, while certainly not common today, isn't surprising because Palmer was a Pennsylvania guy and they wanted the hometown guy to win.
But it made me ask the question: why was Palmer so beloved by fans? He had the huge galleries following him, and he was more or less the Tiger Woods of his era when it came to endorsement deals. This is despite the fact he wasn't even the best player of his era. (Nicklaus is undeniably better, and he had guys like Hogan and Casper at during the earliest years of his career who were also very good)

He was the identifiable guy. People could be Arnold Palmer. He had that jerky swing that didn't even really look like he'd ever had a lesson. And he was the type of player that would either win or go down flaming. Kind of like Bubba, but way better.
And people liked to see his odd little mannerisms like hitchin up his trousers.

No he didn't. He asked why he had those things, he never answered them.

GROW UP. You have ZERO IDEA whta Arnold Palmer was about. It was in the 60's. NOTHING like today. America was looking for some kind of ICON they could grab on to. He was great and had a great personality. LOOK dude if you just want to troll ... DO IT somewhere else. YOU are showing just how immature you are by coming at me in EVERY thread. We all know you are a 20 year old living in your mommas basement POS. Do something else with your time. LIKE FINDING A JOB.

The same reason people love Phil and are indifferent towards VJ Singh.
Phil is a outgoing risk taker, pulls off crazy shots and wins or goes down in incredible flames. That is much more interesting than a straight laced "plodding" fairway and greens player.

If you didn't say stupid shite in every thread, I wouldn't point it out. You still haven't answered any question... unfortunately "I'm an old stupid alcoholic frickbag." isn't a relevant answer.

So even though the FW and greens player is ideally the better player, the guy who is playing from the trees and going at all the pins is going to be more popular? That makes sense. Although I feel like the fact Palmer is a (minor?) sports icon has to be a result of something more than his playing style.

Someone else can correct me if I am wrong on this but I think he had an "every man" appeal that most golfers up until that time didn't have. People were able to relate to him because he and his family was blue collar and he sort of brought golf to the masses.

he had a blue collar appeal and down to earth nature that resonated more than nicklaus - nicklaus was just never as well liked from what my father and grandfather have told me
On a related note - it was interesting around 10-15 years ago when Palmer was interviewed about Tiger Woods. His comment on Woods that surprised me (and tells you something about both men) was that Woods seemed annoyed when signing autographs for fans. And he commented along the lines of "that goes with the territory and you should expect it"
IMO that tells you something about Arnold - esp his emphasis on fan interaction and giving back even when off the course - and by comparison tells you Woods does not share the same point of view.

He had the looks of a model with the blue collar attitude. Women wanted him and men wanted to be him.
