Why isn't the NFL a Running Back league anymore?

The running game used to seem an important aspect of the game. Am I missing something here? I haven't looked at team stats, but there are maybe 3-4 RBs that's had successful/respectable numbers so far this season.

Are they trying to move away from the contact? PI flag happy referees?

You're gonna get tons of macho fricks in this post who are going to give you tons of reasons why the NFL is shite now and CFB reigns supreme, so I'll just save them all the trouble.

The rules are in favor of the pass now. Bottom line. It's easier to pass than it ever has been and the talent is not funneling to the RB position anymore.

Plus, the passing game has taken over the college and high school level.

Its a trickle effect as well.

Because when you throw it, even if it's incomplete, the refs will call defensive PI about 90% of the time.

Can't get illegal contact running the ball.

8 of the top 9 all time passer ratings were held by qbs who were in the league last year. Let that sink in. All passing records set in today's NFL need to be taken with a bit of a grain of salt.

It's just much easier to pass the ball in today's game.

It's almost a surprise when you see a good play in the secondary without a flag on the play. Defensive holding and illegal contact. QB throws up a jump ball for a 40 yard pass interference. Or the defense gets called for a roughing the passer. Or a personal foul if they hit the reciever too high. Or if they hit him too low. New rules make it insanely hard for DBs.

Not sure what's worse the under thrown balls that result in huge pass interference calls or the 3 and 17 illegal contact penalties that give an automatic first down.

Millennial flag football influence. They don't have the stomach for smash mouth football anymore. Bottom line.

Goofdell has it set up to favor passing. He wants to turn the NFL into Arenaball.

Quality of front 7 players are much greater than DBs

Yup. Just another reason to not watch the NFL.

If you want to see some smashmouth ball in hand running football, watch Rugby.

Illegal contact, roughing the passer, defenseless players, etc.

None of those rules help the run game.

I see lots of dumb remarks about the passing advantage, if that's the case you'd never see a run play called.

Imo I think defenses have just adapted to better stop the run. Teams aren't going away from the running game, it's just become harder to actually run on today's defense.
