Why is Women's Basketball on ESPN so often?

Right now on ESPN, the UCONN women are up 61-12 on Mississippi State at half time in an absolute farce of a competition. More women's basketball is on after this, and it has been like this for days.

Why is this on ESPN so much? I may get shite for this, but I can't understand this at all. Nobody has ever asked me if I saw the big women's NCAA/WNBA game, and I've literally never heard it come up in conversation. Who is benefitting from this shite show being televised?

What else are they going to air this time of year? They don't have rights fees to Men's tournament, MLB does not start yet, no NFL etc. I am sure it does better than SC reruns

Once South Carolina and Notre Dame lost last night they should of just ended the tournament and official gave the title to UCONN.

I honestly find it hard to believe this is the absolute best they can do. Even during summer I remember ESPN showing a bunch of the WNBA when there are plenty of baseball games on. I know a lot of it is related to league contracts, but I'm not sure which party benefits from limiting the games shown on ESPN.

I gaurantee you college baseball shown on the big ESPN would get better ratings than WBB.

Maybe in one part of the country.

WNBA is subsidized by the NBA. Maybe the NBA told ESPN if they want to broadcast NBA games you have to broadcast a certain number of WNBA games...

The only reason UConn is the GOAT women's program is because of their proximity to ESPN. Hell, the growth of UConn athletes in general is simultaneous with the emergence of ESPN as the biggest player in sports.

I mean, ESPN tours were a routine part of UConn recruiting trips until Pat Summitt complained about it.

I was thinking that. Still, you would think ESPN could show more NBA and less WNBA.

I think the sports networks are missing the mark big time on womens sports. If you are going to push a womans sport it should be SOCCER. If I watch a womans sport I want to see normal sized semi attractive athletic women, some of whom are hot, playing a competitive sport. Womens soccer should be the womans sport that gets fostered upon the viewing public, not basketball

The funny thing is, at least between Power 5 teams, they're pretty competitive if you remove UConn from the equation.

When will people realize College Baseball is only watched in this region? And not by a lot of people at that.

Exactly. And the funny thing is, the competitive games are less compelling than what UConn is doing to Miss. State right now. But ESPN puts the game early in the day to best hide the embarrassment to WBB that this is.

Ultimately what ESPN airs today has no impact on my life. I've been outside for two days eating crawfish and barbecue. There are too many things to do in springtime to go inside and watch sports.

Now if it was mid February and the weather was shite and I needed something to watch on TV, I might be aggravated. But ESPN/CBS/Fox has men on at that time so it doesn't matter.

On a similar note, I'm surprised that ESPN hasn't partnered with Oprah, Lifetime, QVC or HGTV to brand women's sports with them. I believe the WNBA has a deal with Lifetime but that's it.
