Everyone accepts that the "best" basketball team or baseball team can lose and be eliminated before the championship round but making it to the football championship remains subjective. We cannot have it both ways, either give up some traditions or deal with bs like tOSU (and others in previous years) expecting to get in despite not winning all the games that mattered.

If we truly want a championship earned on the field then split into two 64 team leagues with four conferences which are split into two divisions each. Play the first ten games with teams from the 64 team league. Then start playing elimination games until you have a champ. From there the two league champs could play for it all.

It takes 14 games to win the natty - ten regular season games, the division playoff, two conference playoff games, the lleague champions meeting for it all. Can reserve a spot for the traditional rivalry games if wanted. They can fill the bowls with matchups which determine 3-25 in the final standings.

If it were easy we would already have a solution, I recognize there are other reasons why football has remain unchanged in some ways. For this reason I accept that I won't always agree with the final decisions but I still love the game and each year a darn good team gets the trophy.

If you don't take head-to-head into account then why play the games in the first place?

Head-to-head is already becoming a non-factor.

Here's the truth that people don't want to hear. The NCAA Tournament is not a good way of determining who the best team is over the course of a season.

People think the NCAA basketball tournament is a good way to determine a champion? It's by far the worst way, but it's also the most exciting.

Just FWIW, Ohio State fans did not argue that we should be in the playoff last season(in which we had one loss).

It's not the best way. I love the drama but hate when a great team stumbles early. At least baseball teams can overcome one bad performance. A format such as the one I propose could also mean that losing a close football game may not end all hope based on tie breakers getting them into the first round if there are two teams with the same record but one has stronger performances

It begins with the misperception that every sport is trying to determine which is the best team.

That is incorrect. They are merely trying to determine a champion.

The bowl system is what screwed up FBS football. Without them, we'd have had a 16-team playoff like lesser divisions decades ago.

Now, the bowls are part of it, so we're stuck with a limited field.

BINGO

Doesn't fit the Ohio State narrative though, so they are fighting it tooth and nail.

The champion should be the best team, or at least one of the very top teams.

NCAA basketball tournament is awesome, but as many have pointed out, the absolute worst way to determine a champion.

I will only partially agree with your last statement. I think it's ridiculous to have a 64-team playoff. Hell, 32 is outrageous, but you and I both know money is the deciding factor there.

A tournament that includes only the best of the best will determine a great champion. If you didn't have the tournament, how would we decide? By poll? That's absolutely subjective and way worse than playing a tournament.

While I agree the champ should be the best team, that's why we play the games. Who isn't still struck by that magical NC State run to the title under Jimmy V? Remember a few years ago when the Patriots went through the regular season undefeated but lost the Super Bowl? Were they the best team? Without a doubt, except on that day.

Gotta play the games, man.
