Why has this era of kickers in the NFL become so inconsistent?

Aren't post 2000 kickers accuracy percentages extremely higher than any other time in league history?

Kickers are waaaaay more accurate these days. You simply notice misses more now because they are expected to make them now. Back in the day, missing a 42 yarder wasnt as big a deal

This is a laughable statement. Andersen had a career average of 79%. 21 kickers this season are 80% or better.

Teams are a lot more willing to try new guys these days rather than recycle kickers. Guys like Wil Lutz, Andrew Franks, or Jason Meyers probably wouldn't have gotten a shot.

Kickers have become victims of their own success. Not only are they more accurate, but many coaches don't even blink at sending them out for a 50+ yard attempt. I remember when anything between 40-50 yards made coaches stop and weigh their options, even with good kickers.

On a related issue, I feel like I've seen a lot of college kickers miss short field goals at the end of games simply because they are trying to angle the ball in from the wide hash marks.

Probably. But that won't stop people from saying otherwise

Without looking up any stats on the matter, I'd say kickers are uniformly much, much more consistent than pre-2000 era, so they are used much, much more in situations that they previously would not be expected to perform in. Thus when we do get a miss it seems much more memorable, and when we get multiple misses we mistake it as a systemic issue vs a random string of happenstance.

Member when...

Baltimore Colts' kicker Jim O'Brien kicked a 32-yard game winning field goal in Super Bowl V (and it was considered a big deal?)

Man, things were so much better back then...

Are you trying to compete with goldennugget for shitty kicker thread of the day? That's a battle that cannot be won.

Soccer style sweeping leg kick. More variance in direction. Need to go back to the toe punch imo.
