Why does sports media call every controversy " -gate?"

Bounty-gate, deflate-gate, ect. It is really stupid. I know where it does from, but why do they do it? And yes the media as a whole does it, but sports especially espn is the worst. Doing this makes Watergate seem like it was about water.

I always wonder what would have happened if the break-ins had just occurred at a Hilton or Marriott.

Because language evolves, and the suffix "gate" now means "scandal"

Jetgate is my personal favorite.

The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement.

The continued success of –gate shows how English-speakers have welcomed the means to describe any sort of scandalous event with a snappy suffix.
I don't know that we "welcomed" it as much as the media forced it down our throat until we choked on it.

It's annoying, that's for sure.

Because they're not overly bright or original. 90+ percent of sports media have the same knee jerk reactions to shite that your average message board poster have. They only care about getting more followers or advancing their individual careers by whatever avenue (other than actual talent) that they can. They put no significant original thought or opinions into their shows or broadcast. Their analysis is a fricking joke due to need for immediate coverage.

Journalism today is basically a joke. It is more or less attention whoring.

It all started with watergate-gate

Seems like a recurring pattern is happening here.

I've said this many times.
Ignorant as hell to put gate on any scandal.

It was started by New York Times political columnist and former Nixon speech writer, William Safire, as a way of softening or undermining the criticism of Nixon. The theory was that by associating other scandals with that suffix, the general public would somehow diassociate Watergate with Nixon.

I've seen some people trying to mix it up, calling this one Deflateghazi. I appreciate variety, but that might be even worse.
