Why does everyone think Westbrook stays in OKC this year?

There is now a 0 percent chance he will re-sign with the Thunder. Clearly OKC isn't going to be better than SA, GS, or LAC next year. Why would they keep Westbrook around for 1 more year when they know their best case scenario is 50 wins, a second round loss in the playoffs, and zero compensation this time next year.

On top of that, they will be picking around 20-25th in a loaded draft.

Why not trade Westbrook now? Is one more season of being a 4-5 seed (at best) all that exciting?

I'm a Lakers fan, I would not be opposed to him moving back to Los Angeles

I think there is a really good chance Presti sits down with Westbrook in the coming days and gauges his commitment level and then discusses exit strategies if the tea leaves are blowing a certain way.

They should absolutely trade him. They won't be able to get what they want since he is FA next year but Boston would give up their assets at least I'd think.

i'm sure oklahoma city wants to trade him.

but with westbrook's contract situation, it'll be harder to find a taker. and you can't sign and trade (like an extension), because westbrook wants to wait to sign a long-term deal until next season when the cap goes up even more.

Yeah that is the obvious trade partner if I am Presti. Try and get a couple first rounders for him and start the rebuild. Any team they look to trade him too though will want a verbal commitment from Westbrook so that is the wild card in this idea.

He will get traded somewhere then leave that team to join the Lakers next offseason imo.

The Lakers aren't going to trade for someone and gut their roster when they can sign him outright. Plus, they've already been burned once with Dwight Howard. I doubt Kupchak does that again

Lakers need to make a Butler or Cousins trade to have a realistic shot at Westbrook. Unless he's just dead set on going to LA he's not going to a bottom 5 team that may not even have their first round pick.

1. They can't trade with the Lakers because the Lakers might feel good about their chances of getting him next and might not be willing to give up assets and just wait.

2. Any other team wouldn't want to give up the farm knowing that he might not resign with them next year.

So yeah it's good and all to say they should trade him, but it's not that simple.

Yes they will, there is no guarantee he will sign with the Lakers. There is more than 1 team in LA also.

You just somewhat contradicted yourself. Why would your above statement change if he's traded? He'll have to resign with them next year. Hell might be even worse for them to get him for one year and him saying frick this

Even if he wants to resign, he would be foolish to do so early before additional salary cap raises. That does not help OKC. Having Westbrook carry a team on his own for a year is only going to make him want to leave more. I hate super teams but am glad this happened to that city due to stealing the Sonics and Hornets.

westbrook to la is the worst kept secret int he nba. no one is going to give up assets to get westbrook only to have him leave a few months later and why would the lakers give up picks and players when they can sign him outright next year?

this is the next 30 and 30. how the thunder lost 2 of the top 5 players in the nba for absolutely nothing. not even a second round pick. nada. zilch. nothing.

SAS would be an awesome spot for Westbrook to land if not this year, in free agency next year. Westbrook, LMA and Kawhi would be a team that could compete with GSW

He's not. He's going to be a Laker after next year.

OKC can win 55+ games with Westbrook this year so 1 last exciting season might be worth losing him for nothing if you;re OKC
