It has always been bad in the NBA, but its creeping into college now too unfortunately

I watched the NCAA tourney first couple of days from a hotel room last week and I am sure the housekeepers thought I was a travel agent with how many times I screamed out TRAVEL!!!

Then they screwed up that call, as such was never travelling-- its an offense called carrying.

When you shoot or pass, you get to jump off the pivot foot.

If you dribble, you cannot lift the pivot.

What athletes are doing is using a one foot jump stop. That is how they do some of this legally. Good footwork like McHale had can look like a travel, but it is not.

I agree they do miss some 5 step travels.

even in hs they won't call carrying unless the ball is over your sholders or the play gives you an advantage if i'm walking the ball up and half carrying the ball up until a defender is on e they won't call it it's actully hard to not carry it's the natural motion i used to drible up between my legs to prevent carrying you can't carry and dribble between your legs

Yeah...but I don't think a lot of young guys realize the reality of what traveling really was.

It went from...loping with a ball...to taking 4-5 steps.

There is no sport - that hasn't enjoyed playing with their rules to increase fan support...so I don't blame Stern...(well I blame him)

But football ended up doing the same thing...and changing the NFL with their non-contact rules.

But Stern really totally changed the NBA...and he made them a lot of money because it embraced the Globetrotter model. Is this basketball? Answer...nobody seemed to care. Stern won. You can manufacture real sports at a high level for profit. He proved that.

That's carrying, a totally different infraction. That's one they legit call maybe once in ten games.

Do they even call carrying anymore?

Same thing really...

Carrying was traveling, traveling was carrying...

Basically the same infraction for a missed bounce of the ball.

And the point was...just like traveling, nobody calls this stuff anymore.

Curry could take four steps without a bounce while dribbling...

Carrying...traveling...nothing. No foul called. At all.

What is this sport? Slam ball? LeBron ball? Can we change the name to account for what is on court?

Nothing happens for infractions. The game has completely changed. I don't even know what is a foul today or even what is illegal.

No, no they don't. And don't even get me started on 3 seconds. Is that even a rule any more?

This thread raises an important point.

If you had to play by the rules back in the day...like real basketball...what is your legacy?

But then you didn't...have to play by the rules? Why should you be rewarded in history? When you had it so much easier?

And you could just run to the basket like Usain Bolt or Lebron James...

How much should that affect your legacy? Will historians recognize how the game changed for TV?

Considering the advantage modern players get. Like, the rules of basketball don't matter anymore. It's all just entertainment.

This is ugly to watch and a good change

Because that is not a infraction. If you see this called it is because a real travel or carry accompanied it. But doing just that alone is not a TO

Dr J and MJ sold a lot of clothes.

refs let them walk.

its awful.

They also allow palming.

Magic Johnson palmed the ball so little guys could not steal him blind.

refs ruined the game.

baseball is about the same, because umps invented a bs strike zone which eliminated the high hard one and now you can't throw it 4 inches above the belt right down the middle, or its a ball.

Alas. refs suck. walking. carrying.

I remember what Prom. is saying and what you are saying from playing ball.

I got called on travels and carry or whatever you'd call that normal dribble people use today. The slight carry, spin, arc-stall they do all the time.

That gif is funny because in 1988 in high school - one of our players got called for traveling because he was...doing the normal today dribble...bringing the ball up and turning your hand over...underneath the ball to over the ball - everything everyone does today.

He got called for traveling because he wasn't patty-caking the ball...hand always on top.

and that's why high school refs suck... nobody goes to games to watch refs call traveling, but high school refs have to show the kids who's boss

So just let the players make up the rules as they go?

no worse than the refs making them up...

that gif of Bron above, what advantage was he gaining? a ref making a traveling call there is solely about himself and his own tv time, not about the game and the players involved
