Why do they not call traveling in basketball anymore?

I was taught that on a drive or a layup, you get two steps. You stop your dribble, you have to keep your pivot foot stationary.
Now, they're basically allowed to drive from the top of the key without dribbling or allowed a hop, skip, and a jump to the basket. My main beef is the THREE steps they're allowed after stopping the dribble. Is it just because I'm old and I "don't get it?" Or why would they let the game slowly grow into changing the traveling rule altogether?
Main reason I haven't watched hardly ANY basketball in the last few years.
I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell, but it's a legit question.

My favorite has always been the NBA.
Guy will literally take 4-5 steps on a dunk, and nothing. Big man gets the ball down low, he doesn't lift his pivot, just turns it, and immediate travel.

Maybe they have a shitty ref crew for the game you're watching. Called a few during the Spurs/Knicks game yesterday, no problem.

It gets called a lot, actually. They are pretty lenient with it, but egregious extra steps or moving of the pivot foot almost always get the call.

Yeah, college gets away with 3 steps now. Used to be just NBA. Don't know why

I think non-traveling on such a long history of basketball...has made people think that traveling actually gets called in today's game...because its so egregious.
People were outraged that traditional traveling wasn't called in the 80's...
But then we all got used to that in the 90's - and assumed - this is basketball.
So when the 2000's and now have tried to outdo the 90's - everyone says...oh lets go back to "traditional traveling like the 2000's or 90's."
That's not traditional traveling.
The bar had already been moved egregiously. Nobody remembers how traveling was actually called pre-1986.
You think traveling is called - it's so far removed from what people complained about in the 80's...I mean Jordan was initially called for traveling on a lot of his dunks for basically 2 steps...and well, Stern is a smart business man.
Now you get 4-5 steps...that's the average.

It's a joke. Refs don't care. Stern wanted this. He didn't want traditional real basketball rules on a Pro level.
He wanted excitement...and pizzazz...you can't get to Jordan with traditional real basketball rules. You have to let that mustang run free.
He changed the sport in the 80's - Stern...and there were tons of articles about it...look it up...people complained...he wanted it all run and jump sport by eliminating traveling, and pivots and showing control of the ball.
That's what viewers wanted and he won.

That gif is funny because in 1988 in high school - one of our players got called for traveling because he was...doing the normal today dribble...bringing the ball up and turning your hand over...underneath the ball to over the ball - everything everyone does today.

Most sports have rigged their rule books and officiating over the years to promote and favor the offense because that's supposedly more exciting.
