the southeast isn't full of big tv markets.

If we just look at the confederacy as a model there are still huge markets to be added in North Carolina and Virginia.

no I totally agree. Oklahoma, Virginia, you can add significantly more eyeballs, but I think teams like Missouri damage the brand simply by not being in the southeast

aTm was a good fit in every fricking way...I don't think Missouri added anything personally.

I think there's something to be said for tradition adding to the brand

listen to me, my ideal scenario is getting our asses kicked by LSU every year

Because the political powers in Louisiana were afraid of competition. They used thug politics and backroom deals to insure LSU wouldn't fade off into the void.

Very similar story with Alabama and UAB - only, Alabama had the BOT do the dirty work, LSU had gay politicians and hookers do theirs.

If I made the rules, the first requirement for SEC re-entry would be for Tulane to rebuild an exact replica of Tulane Stadium, with a real grass field.

I loved the old stadium.

An exact replica? I never saw the stadium in person, but surely you would want some upgrades...wouldn't you?

The old stadium was kind of cool, and I'm a retro/history guy when it comes to sports. But that much untreated iron in New Orleans is asking for disaster.

I have been told stories about how loud it was because of people banging on it.

It was a very very very bad decision in retrospect!

Having that small arse stadium is probably the biggest hindrance of all in terms of Tulane ever joining another major conference.

And until the 1940s, Ole Miss' mascot was called the "Flood," not the Rebels...so Bama, Ole Miss, and Tulane all had watery mascots.

A "Southern Ivy League" consisting of schools like Rice, Southern Methodist, Duke, Vanderbilt and Tulane was constantly advocated, but each of the other schools decided to stay in their league.

Tulane should probably have tried to round up that group together BEFORE withdrawing from the SEC, not after.

The only major southern private school that would have probably been willing to join back then was Miami (and they were hardly "major" back then). Georgia Tech, though a public school, has long claimed to be more academic-centric than most southern schools and was obviously also available at the time.

Baylor, Duke, TCU, and Vandy probably wouldn't leave their leagues then or today either. In recent years, however, Rice, SMU, and TCU were all available after the Big XII refused them admittance when the league formed in 1996.
