Their focus shifted more to academics... eventually they couldn't recruit well enough to compete due to academic requirements for admission.

Academics were fine, they erroneously felt that football was a waste of money and a drain on academics
Pulled out, then moved them to the super dome
Tulane stadium hosted Super Bowls and the sugar bowl
80k used to file in to watch fricking Tulane play...cocksucking mother fricker
I'd rather be the door mat of the SEC than the door mat of the American conference (which is a good conference but still)

History has shown that article to be 99% bullshite

As a football team? Yeah, we're a joke.
I like the rant with all the sec fans. I can't talk shite about programs to LSU fans, but arky et al, we have more sec titles than they do

No doubt....but it's interesting to see the "reasoning" they gave back then.
Here's a MUCH BETTER read on why they actually did it: LINK
quote:
Tulane president Rufus Harris had long been an advocate of scaling back intercollegiate athletics. But he also hired Henry Frnka as Tulane's coach in 1946, and that brought in a major football upgrade. Respected national sportswriters considered Tulane under Frnka the epitome of a football factory. "Henry was a winner, and Henry really would do anything to win," Tunstall said.
quote:
In 1951 Harris swung a heavy ax on the athletic department, slicing football grants-in-aid to 75, reducing staff and coaching salaries, and curtailing scouting activities. Physical education became a minor, and -- for the rest of the decade -- athletes were required to follow academic tracks leading to standard B.A. or B.S. degrees.
quote:
On June 1, 1966, Tulane withdrew from its athletic home of 35 years, ostensibly to play a national schedule against more like institutions. Some said Tulane could become the "Notre Dame of the South," an independent with the flexibility to meet quality opponents from all points of the college football map.
"That wasn't it at all," said Rix Yard, Tulane's athletic director at the time. "The purpose was to lighten the schedule. We had to have some relief on the field. Those were tough days. Remember we had an 0-10 season in 1962. I remember going to (then-SEC Commissioner) Bernie Moore and pleading to allow us to reduce our schedule. He wouldn't allow it."
I do find this to be an interesting concept, though:
quote:
A "Southern Ivy League" consisting of schools like Rice, Southern Methodist, Duke, Vanderbilt and Tulane was constantly advocated, but each of the other schools decided to stay in their league.

You'll also notice 1949 was our last title, then 1951, it begins

Tulane is like this hot chick who dumped some dude who then became a billionaire
Much regret

Posted on 10/28/15 at 4:14 pm to MontyFranklyn

More like an ugly chick that dumped a guy that became a billionaire. And he never thought about her again.
Tulane doesn't have the chest to play in the SEC.

Totally fair, but we come with some positives
1. An easy win
2. Easy travel
3. A better location than a lot of sec teams
4. Any sec opponent with a heisman hopeful gets a stat padding game
5. Pelicans > Bears
6. A rival, one you own
7. SEC title games in the superdome rather than the Georgia dome or that giant butthole
8. Geographically, you won't be selling people a bunch of bullshite. We're actually southeastern
9. On the off chance we beat an Arkansas or auburn, you can mercilessly ridicule them as well as us
10. A lot of Yankees but still not as sjw as ole miss or aTm
11. Are you really happy with Missouri? They're not even southeastern and their uniforms look arena league
12. We're a charter member, so the hit your conference reputation will take will be mitigated
13. The grass is pretty delicious and Les flicking his ear boogers in Nola will actually spruce up a lot of places.

Only if you can make A&M a normal school.
