country. You don't call a stranger "short stuff" or "big chin" or "darkie" unless you're trying to piss them off. thing as calling Jewish people, "the BigNoses

with the exception of "darkie" these are all qualities that people are self conscious about because they're considered to be unattractive...

white
black
yellow
red

although not precise, they're just the color of skin, and not really considered to be unattractive qualities. People often use the term "skin color" and "people of color"...so I'm not really getting HOW it is offensive or HOW it is racist...

meanwhile, the Indians should be far more distasteful for those opposing the redskins name. Indian

(while historically understandable because CC though he was in India and NA originally crossed from Asia and shared were for all intents and purposes "indian")

Indians implies they weren't the first settlers of America. It also is referencing a group by their skin color just not as direct as saying "skin", it also has a very undignified logo...Using the same logic as those opposed to redskins...it would be akin to having a logo that was a picture of a black guy with a flat bill or hoodie, big nostrils and lips...

but why redskins? because nobody gives a frick about the Cleveland Indians and if you're trying to manufacture a controversy for the purpose of drawing attention to yourself (coughpeterkingcough) then D.C. with one of the most popular teams is a great place to start

and the moment they had a high profile player with nation wide appeal, this whole "controversy" went up to a new level

it's all bullshite...no one uses the word redskins to demean native americans, the logo is tasteful and dignified, but the real issue is it has a color next to the word skin, and because of issues that no longer exist at a concerning or socially relevant level (racism) people think it's racist without stopping to think why they would believe that

being offended, finding offense, or believing "redskins" is racist, does nothing but prove that those people have not moved beyond these issues and are treading water in the past.

It makes headlines. That is the main reason. I am tired of hearing these sports casters on ESPN and other sites saying why they won't say Redskins. They are just on the headline bandwagon. I bet they would still say Negro League even though that is a racist word. Where is there stance on that? I need to email some and ask them that.

Anybody who denies that this is racist is an arse. But the question, open for discussion, is it worth fighting over. I think Chief Wahoo is worse. and Nd's leprechaun sucks

they just all want attention, and then it gets to the point where so many are on the wagon, that you are worried you're standing there alone as America's #1 racist...it's so fricking stupid

I wish someone would front the cash to put peter king, phil simms, and a shitload of them to a polygraph to determine if they genuinely find it offensive.

I don't think it is racist. I think it has become politically incorrect even though no one seemed to have a problem with the name 15 years ago.

I'm just responding to the point because that's probably the first time someone has gone beyond "well times have changed"

of course Mulder when you disagree , you need to resort to insulting due to the weakness of whatever point you try to make.

of course redskins is a racist term. You can't deny that (well maybe you are which reflects more on you)

If it was based on nothing but white guilt, that would be one thing. Issues that are typically fall apart (see FSU's Seminole). The white guilt logic obviously doesn't make sense:

A long time ago our forefathers slaughtered and mistreated the Natives and took their land
We're sorry about that
Not really that sorry though, we're not giving it back
So we're gonna change a team name
???????
Profit

We've seen issues built on nothing more than liberal phony white guilt, and the silly logic above is exactly why they lose steam and fall apart very quickly. This issue continues to persist. It's time to consider that there may be more to it than just white guilt.

Except for that whole thing with the Redskins football team losing the patent 15 years ago due to the same issue

All of the other names like Brave Blackhawk Chief etc make reference to actual people, tribes, events or whatever. Redskin is and has only meant one thing a pejorative term for Native Americans. It is a blatant racial slur

The white guilt logic obviously doesn't make sense:

I don't think white guilt has anything to do with the "issue" or more accurately, how it is being spread...that comes down to the same old thing...$ and exposure. I'm with you though, I do think suckers like JB are 100% white guilt or trying to move against the current of popular sentiment...I honestly believe that if you had a polygraph, 90% of the whiners would be exposed as frauds

and considering the overwhelming majority of people do not think it is racist...I really cannot point to white guilt.

A long time ago our forefathers slaughtered and mistreated the Natives and took their land

I would love to have this conversation in another thread, but by addressing this, I'm shifting the conversation away from whether or not "redskins" is racist.
quote:

So we're gonna change a team name

so it's survivor's guilt?

quote:

It's time to consider that there may be more to it than just white guilt.

but it has only gained steam with 2 types...sports journalist and media and NA organizations

do you realize how many black people feel they are discriminated against? That white people are overwhelmingly racist? Even if an opinion or sentiment is possible doesn't mean it is reasonable, with merit, or grounded in reality...individuals are smart, groups are dumb. Do you know how many people believe in JFK conspiracies, UFOs, and 9/11 conspiracies?

how does "braves" or "Indians" make reference to "actual people" they are just as specific as "redskins"

quote:

Redskin is and has only meant one thing a pejorative term for Native Americans

not true and in fact, completely the same thing as "braves" and "Indians"...Native americans didn't call themselves "braves" or "Indians" or "redskins" it was just how settlers identified a whole group of people without naming each individual tribe. Have people used it as a slur? sure...so?

what is a more accurate description?

redskin

or

indian

Offense and discrimination are not the same thing. This is about a name offending people. Not complex, systemic, societal discrimination

There's real world evidence to counter those claims. The belief or disbelief in certain facts and events shouldn't be compared to this. What's your counter again when someone says something offends them? Can you read their mind?
