MJ all day. But if I had to choose between Shaq and Lebron it's Lebron. Shaq is so old and overweight I would take JR Smith

shaq in his prime

not only was he more dominant on offense in his prime you had to have 3 centers on your team to hack him just to have a chance to win. and he was a better defensive force

If I needed one player for his peak year, I take Shaq. To build a team around, I'd take Lebron.

I would say just the opposite. Shaq dominated the game and was really only shown up by one player early in his career and Hakeem is up there with the best of all time imo.

FYI by my count, last 10 yrs Lebron =
28.0/7.3/7.0, 0.8 blocks, 1.6 steals, and shot 50.7%; 28.9 PER

No bad answer although around here Lebron is more topical and therefore more hated.

Both behaved like stars in the NBA: demanding the money they felt they deserved and moving to other franchises when it suited their perceived interests.

You could make an argument that Lebron leads by example when it comes to conditioning etc. Shaq was not nearly as serious about his aerobic conditioning (as he should have been) and famously had his surgery/rehab on company time once instead of doing it in the off season.

My bias is Shaq was the more unstoppable player but Lebron improves the play of his teammates in general... but I'm sure even saying something as innocuous as that will lead to an stupid argument about Miami for Lebron.

Shaq in the late 90's/early 2000's. The game is too fast now for guys like Shaq to run. Guys like DeAndre Jordan are a perfect fit these days for big men.

A center so dominant, he never led the NBA in rebounding

Shaq's prime makes me wanna say him. But I think Lebron will have more productivity and consistency over the course of his career.

Give me Lebron

And I don't even like him

That is ridiculous.

Jordan, in the 7 year span before he retired, averaged:

33.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 2.8 steals, 1.0 block per game on 52% shooting with a PER of 30.4

If Shaq's peak was longer and he didn't have the toe issue I would've said him. But I thought we have to pick them for the totality of their careers and thus far it looks as though Lebron will be able to go a lot longer being very effective. That's who I'd want to build a team around. If Shaq hadn't broken down I would've picked him. Best ability is availability and Lebron's health has been remarkable to say the least.

Hakeem didn't show up Shaq.

Shaq more than held his own against Hakeem in those Finals despite his young age
