okay then.

I'd take Washington on a neutral field.

but give me the Canes if the game was played in the Orange Bowl.

LSU was the coaches champion. USC was the media champion. And they both have trophies.

It would have a been a game for the ages, though.

The 6 BCS conferences and Notre Dame agreed that the BCS system would decide THE national champion. You can't go back after the fact and say "look we're at the top of a poll, we're the champs!"

They didn't even go undefeated as it was. They finished 11-1-1. Should have been 10-2-1 and no national championship. GT actually finished undefeated that year with one tie.

Colorado also got a gift call to beat Notre Dame in their bowl game too.

And you obviously hate LSU. So what makes your opinion so pure?

It isn't an opinion, it is a fact that LSU and USC split the National Title.

There's no going back - after the fact.

In fact, now there's been more of a revisionist history about it not being a split - at the time it was very clear - it was a split and every media outlet talked about it as such.

A refresher course in how this works...

The BCS is just system to match up the top two teams for a made for TV "title game" - it doesn't award anything by and of itself.

Awarding agencies:

Coaches poll were contractually obligated to award the BCS champ their poll - so it's the Coaches Poll title.

AP is not contractually obligated but they are free to award it to the BCS champ or another team.

Every "BCS" Champion (which is no longer going to be in a year) has been awarded and claimed both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll - title...(including LSU in 2007)

Except LSU in 2003...they were not awarded the AP title while every other BCS champ was - USC was awarded the AP title.

AP/Coaches titles mark the sands of time for CFB as to whose who of national title holders.

How you still hold onto - not a split - is quite illogical.

I'm an LSU alum, and even I admit it's split. Not sure where all of this confusion comes from

To be perfectly honest if it wasn't for the BCS there most likely wouldn't have even been a "split" both polls had USC #1

everything changes everything though.

OU coasted into that game against KSU knowing they were already a mathematical lock for the BCS NCG. If there wasn't a BCS system in place OU would have gone into that game with a different mindset.

FWIW, the biggest beneficiary of OU losing to KSU was USC. If it wasn't for that loss they don't get a split after LSU beats OU.

Which makes the point even stronger.

The Coaches poll couldn't even vote their conscience. They had to completely flip-flop and rubber stamp the winner of the BCS game because they were contractually obligated. In essence...the computers completely decided that BCS title...because the human vote was taken out of it at the end.

Which is why you had headlines at the time...

"Computer Champ vs. People's Champ" - it wasn't fair to LSU at all...they did nothing wrong...but it people felt it bizarre that both human polls were being ignored by this system.

So when everyone says...we agreed upon it...well no, the AP didn't agree. The Coaches Poll agreed to rubber-stamp and "validate" the BCS by giving their title to the system...the AP did not.

Mostly just people in the media and PAC/Big10 fans. The rest of us felt pretty sure a team who played one ranked team in the regular season doesn't deserve a NC. IDC if the name attached is Boise or USC - if you ignore preseason rankings and looked at resumes there was no question who deserved what.

Fine. But I read national magazines like Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, etc. A lot had USC on the cover as #1...I'm sure people other places felt strongly about LSU.

...and I don't want to get into nonsense about who was better or who deserved it.

The fact is LSU won the Coaches Poll and USC won the AP Poll - that's a split title.

"The AFCA National Championship Trophy (Coaches' Trophy) is the trophy awarded by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) to the winner of college football's BCS National Championship Game, which determines the national champion for purposes of the Coaches' Poll".

Perhaps if OU had won their CCG that year, people would be more inclined to agree with you. As it stands they got completely dominated by KSU, and had no business being in the BCS Championship (Sugar Bowl) against LSU.

Also, USC was, as Miles is wont to say, "undefeated in regulation".

They knew that no matter how they played they would be in N.O. anyway.............

I went to LSU but honestly I think USC would have beaten LSU in 03, unless it was played in Tiger Stadium or the Superdome.

Well, it would have been in the dome, so there's a vote for LSU.

Sure. That's possible...... Put THAT 2003 LSU team in the Rose Bowl and they DOMINATE USC................ UNLESS PETEY let the grass grow..........
