exactly why they need to identify a mid-major guy, offer him before someone else does, and hope that its the right pick

well to be fair, that's exactly who they just fired

I'll bet they go for a guy with program ties.

and before the guy i just referenced, they went with this guy

I don't love Charlie Strong at all. I just think Miami wouldn't love him and he wouldn't love Miami.

Swagger and Da U and thugs from South Beach are the complete opposite of Strong's M.O. and persona

If you look at the 19 or so players that UofL drafted last season, by majority they were Florida guys that Strong brought in. And he brought in Michael Dyer and had Clint Hurtt on staff there (and kept him on staff after the Miami stuff dropped).

I don't think it was a thug issue at Texas as much as it was a spoiled arse player issue.

Johnson, Erickson, Davis. Every great Miami coach has been a brash, cocky young gunner playing fast and loose with the rules. Except for maybe Schnellenberger.

Has Miami accepted that da U is not coming back, that they have to cheat to win and they're not cheating anymore? Will they really be happy with this kind of Mark Richt, 8-win seasons, but hey at least he's a good guy... That's how I see it going with CS, at best.

I think the issue Miami is going to run into, especially since the NCAA botched the hell out of that investigation, is that they're going to be under the microscope if they achieve any kind of success. Strong can at least bring the appearance of a "clean" program.

Charlie Strong won't leave UT before 2016 at the earliest, and if does it's because he's passed away. -99% of happening

Bring in someone like Fuente and then stack the staff with SoFla recruiters. Close down Miami. Win championships.

Why would any respectable coach want to go to Miami? They aren't coming back.

People have said this about basically every major program at one time or another. Everyone program has had string of bad coaches. There's no reason Miami can't win and win big again.

Sports are cyclical. I love when people say Miami will never be a major player again just because they've sucked for the past decade

They were right about Army, Navy, Ga Tech, Colorado, Tennessee, etc

Even Notre Dame. They're solid with Kelly but they will never be that elite dynasty again.

Not college football. You have to recruit. You're gonna be a small, insular private school focused on academics and keeping a clean nose, you're not gonna be a consistently elite team. You gotta make a decision, play big boy ball or not.

I know Stanford is a nice exception but they are just that, an exception, and they're still not elite, they're not going to win National Titles, and that level won't be sustained for a decade.

Stanford and Miami are not comparable in any way. UM is in the middle of the most concentrated pool of talent in the country and can get in any qualifier they want. They don't have anything close to Stanford's restrictions.

One of the most successful programs in CFB history located in the best recruiting area in the country (and a city that recruits love)--Miami will be competitive again at some point. It's just a matter of time.

They're both small insular private schools without a real solid fanbase with fantastic history they will never recapture

Unless they choose to go to FSU, Florida, Bama, Oregon, etc. Which, why wouldn't they at this point?

No, they're not comparable academically. I can draw parallels though

That didn't stop him from taking the Louisville job. The culture and "image" of the two programs isn't all that different besides the fact that Miami has more of a history of winning. Of course, Louisville was always gonna be a stepping stone job for him, whereas Miami would be a step down from Texas.

Well they have never really maintained success long term, that's the difference. They had one "era" where they were great and that's it. Programs like Bama, Ohio St, LSU, etc will never be down for too long, but Miami's success was more the exception than the rule.

I might get killed for this, but I think Miami was kind of a "fluke" in a sense. It is essentially Tulane in many respects.

The program was nothing before Schnellenberger and was almost dismantled.

Private school with vast majority of students/alums not from the area which leads to a huge lack of local support.

Sitting on recruiting hotbed.

Up until recently, neither with on campus stadium.

I could go on.

Difference being Schnellenberger was an absolute stud of a coach. The University almost created "tradition" from thin air. This has led to Miami being able to bring in a run of great coaches that had kept that alive, but make no mistake, those coaches HAVE to be great in that environment. Miami cannot afford to hire a merely good coach and churn out 9 to 10 wins.

Miami football = UCLA basketball.

Both great in their own rights, and for a period of time both had some of the GOAT teams, but neither program can be compared to the truly elite in their respective sports.
