Minnesota was a power up until the 60's.

Since 1941 when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, Minnesota has zero outright Big Ten Championships. They shared the title twice 1960 & 1967. Minnesota won a total of 2 bowl games in the 20th century.

Minnesota has more AP national championships than LSU has AP/BCS national championships.

THE correct answer. Barring injury a NC game appearance is a strong possibility....

If you're going to include Minnesota as a traditional power in this discussion you may as well throw in the Ivy League Schools and Army/Navy

Ivy League schools aren't allowed to play in postseason games though.

It's mainly about access to talent:
UCLA

USC/Texas

Washington

Arkansas/Tennessee

Miami

Georgia Tech

Michigan

Penn St

Pitt

Nebraska

Minnesota

Arkansas?

Doesn't have the recruiting base to be a contender year in and year out. Just look at 2011: climb to #3 in the polls prior to the last week of the regular season, but get destroyed by the teams that finished #1 and #2 that year.

quote:

Georgia Tech

Not with not only their academics, but located in the middle of SEC country.

quote:

Miami

Does not have the fanbase/facilities/money to compete with the Florida, Alabama, LSU, Texas, USC, etc. of the world.

quote:

Michigan

Historically above average. 12 double digit win seasons in last 34 years. They have TWO AP National Championships since it was started in 1936. LSU, Florida, and Alabama have that many (plus an extra one for Bama) since 2003.

quote:

Minnesota

quote:

Nebraska

Again, do not have the recruiting base others have. When they were on their 1990s run they were able to counteract that by enrolling partial qualifiers as well, which the Big 12 and the B1G do not allow.
quote:

Penn State

Like all B1G powers outside of tOSU, they will compete every few years with the right coach but not year in and year out.

quote:

Pitt

No. ACC is an improvement over than Big East, but they won't be able to compete with the southern schools on a yearly basis.

quote:

Tennessee

Recruiting is killing them. They aren't the national brand they once were and with schools like Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida State, UGA....you get the picture... recruiting like they are it will be hard to overcome. Maybe like the later Fulmer years where they make an SECCG appearance every 3-4 years is the best they can do going forward.

quote:

Texas

Their issues run pretty deep. Until their old money dies off they will be stuck where they are. One national championship in the last 40+ years, with their resources is just sad.

quote:

UCLA

Have a great recruiting base in southern California, but do not have the resources financially that schoole like Texas, A&M, LSU, Alabama, tOSU, UF, etc. have.

quote:

USC

Same as UCLA. Although I think fan support for both will drop when the NFL finally puts a team in LA again. That's a pro sports town.

quote:

Washington

If Chris Petersen can't get it done, I don't know who could.

Yeah I keep hearing that around here, but I don't know where it comes from.

"USC ranked third among universities in the nation behind Stanford and Harvard for collecting the most contributions last year."

"The survey counts only money and other gifts that were collected during the year, officials of the New York-based CAE said. Donations pledged -- including many with fanfare -- but not yet transferred to the schools were not counted."

This is money collected, not pledged. So maybe A&M or Bama or somebody has more money promised to them, but when it comes down to the real thing, USC is third in the nation.
LINK

Obviously not all this money goes to athletics, but to say USC does not have the resources of some SEC schools is preposterous.

Georgia is the answer. But we will have to fire Richt or have him retire first.

Welp, UCLA's fate for 2014 has already been sealed and it's only February. So sorry Bruins fans.

That's just it. It's not going to athletics. The fan support is no where near most SEC schools. Your average attendance in 2012 was 87,945 for a 93,607 stadium, and it dropped to 73,126 this year. Back in 2000 USC averaged just over 57,000 a game. Even in their worst seasons Bama, LSU, Florida, etc. don't play in a half empty stadium. If/When the NFL finally puts a team in LA it will drop USC and UCLA's support even more.

Nebraska, Pitt, and Minnesota have no place in this discussion. They will never be elite programs again. Never.

Georgia Tech needs to can Paul Johnson asap and get one of this young innovative coaches in. You're in one of the top 5 recruiting hotbeds in the country and you run a gotdamn single a high school offense.

USC

Once USC gets its numbers back, the Trojans will return to glory. The 2015 recruiting class could rank #1 nationally.

I don't know if they will ever compete for a national championship often, but they have won 9 or more games only 5 times since they won it all in 1990. That should not happen there.

The poster I was responding to didn't say USC doesn't have the fan support. He said they didn't have the resources. USC has the resources.

GT's problem is that they don't have the typical "jock" majors.

Edit: And everyone has to take calculus.
