This is how I've always described it, at least as far as the big four North American sports go:

NBA has the best overall athletes

MLB has the most coordinated athletes

NFL has the toughest athletes

NHL has a well rounded combination of the other three

Cross Country skiing. Imagine Rowing upstream while running on treadmill at the same time

I was a swimmer and coach. This question is just too subjective. Honestly, swimming could be the answer considering the event. If you swim the 50m Free, then no. If you swim the 400m IM and 200m Free, then possibly. Water polo is an activity we do as a "fun day". The kids don't even now they are probably "working out" harder this day than a normal training day. I would not consider either of these to be the most grueling. Remember, water polo does have a shot clock and they are not exactly sprinting from end to end. You have positions very congruent to soccer/basketball.

I really love the answer MMA. It combines the speed, strength and coordination that exceeds the demand of boxing. It is non-stop for those three minutes and they are a heavily taxing three minutes. The body recognizes 1:30-3:00 long activities as the most painful due to the natural flows of using the ATP-CP system and then going into anaerobic glycolysis. This is why when you run, the 800m dash is the most painful event...it's a long hard pace non-stop. Imagine that for each round in MMA.

So, after debate, MMA for me.

Yup. Elite pro motocross racers are the most physically fit athletes...along with soccer players.

See, everyone says that. Because everyone has hit a bag hard once in their life and died after two minutes.

But if you've played water polo...imagine boxing but doing it where you can't get your legs to offer support - you have to expend as much energy but you have no foot-hold.

I don't think people have ever realized how tough and difficult water polo was - but look internationally...it's all crazy, muscled people stronger than most football players, having to hand fight without touching the ground all game - and then turn into Nolan Ryan and fire a shot.

Yeah these guys are in bad shape:

It's wrestling plus swimming but you can't touch the ground.

I used to box. I also played tennis. I never vomited while playing tennis. I did vomit after boxing.

If you've ever done it, you'd know.

Yep. Just the dancing and punching. There's a reason they have 3-minute workout routines using a punching bag.
