Where'd the Sam Darnold hype come from?

To be fair, I didn't watch much CFB last year, and probably didn't watch any USC, but I don't remember them setting the world on fire. Now fast forward to 3 weeks ago and Sam Darnold is a Heisman candidate and is at the Top of Kiper Big Board.

Is this an elite QB on a team that was young last year, or is this just USC hype coming back since they're out of the sanction period?

Edit: Not sure why a legit question is getting downvoted, and no, I didn't get to watch the Rose Bowl.

He didn't start the season for them last year.

Dude is awesome.

They won like 10 straight games last year when he was inserted into the lineup, then had an awesome performance in the rose bowl. So then he became the next John elway

I'm still bullish on him a little. Not crowing him yet as the next great pro prospect that everyone should be tanking for

Probably when they beat Washington on the road. The media hype amplified when he beat Penn State.

Did you not see last year's Rose Bowl? It felt like a legit nfl superstar was QB-ing the team. Dude is incredible

Yeah, Darnold lit it up, especially in the fourth quarter

Dude gets more press than a returning Heisman Trophy winner because he plays for USC.

It's offensive.

I'm did you not watch the rose bowl?

Showed he had elite arm strength and can make all the throws. He will be an NFL QB.

They started the season 1-3, including a blowout loss to Alabama. Todd Helton was about to be fired.

Darnold starts the next game. USC runs the table the rest of the season largely because of him. Then he puts on a show in the Rose Bowl. USC was a very average team last year, but they had a great quarterback that carried them and saved the head coach's job.

There might be 10 humans on the planet who can make the throw in that gif. Darnold has everything you could possibly want in a QB

Perfectly threaded on an arc between 2 defenders while the receiver is cutting across the end zone......room for error there is zilch.

It was a nice pass but I think the hyperbole is a little out of hand.

On a rope, between two defenders, to a receiver he can't see when he releases the throw, in the clutch with the game on the line.

He didn't loft that pass. He put velocity on it and put it in a 6 inch window that was the only place it was catchable.

If that's an easy throw, then NFL teams wouldn't have a problem finding starting QBs. Half the starting QBs in the NFL can't make that pass, maybe even more.

I never said it was an easy throw. Just that the hyperbole of "ONLY 10 HUMANS ON THE PLANET CAN MAKE THAT THROW" is crazy.
