Seeing the NOLA baseball thread where will the 4 major North American Leagues expand to next?

Should they contract any? Which I do not see happening.

Should they relocate any teams?

If only expanding here are my guesses

NFL
Should not they are at a great number at 32, 8 divisions 4 each. But if they do expand, they will need to add 8 teams. I guess they can go to Europe for 4 and to some locations outside US for others.

The International Division
London
Paris
Berlin
Barcelona

All have had Football before and have the infrastructure to do so

The Continental Division
Toronto/Hamilton/Montreal
Mexico City
Portland
Salt Lake City

This satisfies the need to go international but I hate NFL expansion.

NBA

I am not sure where they need to go, maybe St Louis or Kansas City possibly? Seattle needs a team to replace the Sonics, but do the citizens want to build a new arena? Vegas should get a team if the Knights and Raiders work out.

MLB

San Jose/Salt Lake (just to add a team out west)
Charlotte

NHL
Quebec City, if only to move the Coyotes
Hamilton to balance the latest addition of Vegas
Portland or Seattle to give Vancouver another "rivalry"

The NFL adding 8 teams would be absolutely an awful business decision

I think most leagues, if not all, are maxed out.

You have to even up the divisions and there is no other way around it. They would get approximately 5.6 Billion dollars from Expansion as in 2002 the expansion fee was 700 million dollars. They also will get advertising from other revenue sources.

MLB
None

NFL
Hopefully none

NHL
Some U.S. city that doesn't care about hockey, league needs to contract teams more than anything

NBA
Seattle is an an obvious choice but I don't know who would be the second team. It would make the most sense if a current NBA franchise relocated to Seattle instead of having to add two expansion teams.

Charlotte would be tough for MLB. It's Orioles territory as compensation for the Nationals being in Washington.

The five biggest open markets are Orlando, Sacramento, Portland, Charlotte, and Indy. None of those make a compelling case.

Agree that 32 teams is perfect for the NFL and is ideal for scheduling. If they went to 34, they could do a 17 game season with one neutral site game. The fifth place teams would play through their conference and be each opponent's 17th game, and then play each other.

Any US market with an NHL arena could work for the NBA. Only downside would be diluting the talent pool with too many teams. You have small rosters and just need 15,000 fans 41 times.

The NHL could expand into Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Houston, Hamilton, or Quebec City.

Yeah the only way I see European expansion working in NFL is if they go 4 teams. I've worked it out before and would be much easier to build training center/hotels for teams going across the ocean and just play the 2 away games over there back to back then come home and have the euro teams come over here for multi game stretch with the same kind of centers built over here for he visiting euro teams. European teams could then play 11/16 games over there and break down the 5 North American games I've 2 or 3 trips. Obviously you could have the byes after The transatlantic trip.

Not a major league in the 4 major league group IMO. I think it's really only 3 right now.

Would be interesting when a Euro team gets a playoff game. I think you would have to have a bye before the first round of playoff games.

I think it would be what a 7 hour flight from NYC to Heathrow?

I'm not sure a ton of top free agents would line up to go live in Europe.

If the money is right, I bet they would. Especially if not married. Taxes are a big concern in expansion though.

Are you going to tax them from New York, the state/country they play in? Is it taxable by the US government?

Those along with some other issues, are reasons I do not like Euro expansion in NFL.

I thought from Miami to LAX is "only" a 4 hour flight?

MLB is the one that could take on expansion the easiest.

NBA would be better off contracting, though it would never happen.

NFL has a rocky road in front of them, expansion would be stupid.

Don't know enough about NHL to guess.

MLB: San Antonio, Memphis, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, Portland, Charlotte, or New Orleans

NBA: Kansas City/ St. Louis, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Louisville (it's really not that small), Baltimore, or San Diego

NFL: San Antonio, Portland, Salt Lake City, Sacramento/Oakland/San Diego, probably would be best for them to expand internationally

NHL: Houston, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, or Salt Lake City
