Probably basketball. Let me put it this way. Antonio Gates couldn't make the NBA because he didn't have the physical traits. He was too short and wasn't athletic enough to make up the difference in height. In the NFL, Gates is one of the best physical specimens in the entire league. I can see a ton of NBA players being athletic enough to play in the NFL. I don't see many NFL players having the physical skills to play in the NBA.

Or Tony Gonzalez. You could go on and on. There's no sports league with better athletic specimens than the NBA.

I agree with your statement, but interesting enough, I saw an interview with Bo Jackson from back in the day and he admitted he can barely even dribble let alone play basketball.

just rare specimens also

pretty much every DB in the NFL is a super stud athlete, but they're 5-8 to 6-0 typically

finding 6-8 guys who are athletic is exponentially more rare

Only the heavyweights are elite athletic specimens. How many other sports have two athletes who weigh under 160 lbs be the best in their respective sport? No offense to Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather but could you see either of them making it in the NBA or NFL? I don't. Now, boxing is definitely one of the most demanding physical sports but so is being a triathlete, cyclist, or swimmer. It doesn't make Michael Phelps a better athlete than Lebron James though.

Basketball, case closed. tons of NBA stars played football in high school and tons of NFL stars played basketball at some point. For instance, Charlie Ward. Charlie Ward could have made it in the NFL, especially today. Pac-Man Jones, this dude was pretty good at basketball in high school but not good enough to make it to the NBA. Julius Peppers, was pretty awesome at UNC on the court but knew he couldn't make in the NBA and stuck with football. Gates, Gonzalez, Randal-el (actually played all 3 big sports at Indiana) and a few more all could play college ball but knew that they had no future in the NBA. On the other hand guys like Nate Robinson, Lebron, Carmelo and whom ever else you can think of, thats not too tall, could make it in the NFL

Overall though, I'd give it to Rugby. It all depends on how you define and rate athleticism

Well you obviously have a pretty weird definition if rugby players are your #1 in terms of athleticism. Tough as nails? Absolutely. Elite athletically compared to NBA players? Not a chance.
