College basketball?
Every slightly above average power 5 team makes it
RIP LSU 2015-16

NHL and it's not even close.
Nah.
An 8 seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs can win the title. There are a lot of teams every year once the playoffs start that can win the Cup, so the regular season matters in that sense. Some of the teams fighting for a playoff spot at the end of the season can make deep runs.
2, 3, maybe 4 teams can win the NBA title this season. The regular season is irrelevant.

College basketball and the NBA. I enjoy both but both are the definition of tournament sports.

That's exactly why the NHL regular season is meaningless. Regular season excellence counts for nothing in the NHL. All that matters is getting hot at the right time. The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup a few years ago even though they had more losses than wins in the regular season. That's like a 7-9 NFL team winning the Super Bowl. It's a complete joke.

1. College basketball for conferences that get only 1 tournament bid that is based on conference tournament.
Literally pointless.
2. The rest of college basketball
UCONN 2011 pretty much proved this. I mean hypothetically you could win a national championship without winning a single regular season game. It is unlikely but it is possible.

Going to have to agree with the NHL. The regular season is completely different from the playoffs style wise and doesn't really serve much purpose other than to make the owners money.
It's all about the Cup, the players know it, the coaches know it, the GMs know it and the fans know it. Probably what makes the NHL have the best playoffs as well.

NBA because there is essentially no parity, in an average season there are MAYBE four teams with a legitimate chance to win the title and a top 2 seed almost always wins it. Take this year, nobody but Cleveland/GS/SA/LA is winning it all. The regular season and first two rounds of the playoffs are usually a formality in preparation for the conference finals.
The NHL, MLB and NFL regular seasons actually matter because low seeds frequently get hot and compete for titles.

And they barely missed the playoffs in 2015. No one wanted them to get in, because if they did they would have been a tough out.
Hence, the regular season mattered.
It means absolutely nothing in the NBA.

You're missing my point. If the NHL regular season meant anything, a team with a record below .500 record would have virtually no shot of winning a championship. In the few times it's happened In other sports, it was a complete aberration like the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals.

many conferences do not let the bottom feeders play in their tournament.
its extremely rare for a P5 team to play 4 games in 4 days and get the auto bid.
Its happened, what? once?
rarely, a team got to the finals and lost after winning the first 3.

College basketball without question

I think we're just viewing it differently.

NBA and College Basketball for the same reasons already mentioned.
NBA: only have a handful of teams that can compete.
College Basketball/Baseball: throwing baseball in for the same reason. For many conferences, the only thing that matters is the Conference Tournament. A team can finish 6th in the conference with no hope of making the Tournament, upset the #1 team in the conference and go to the Dance. See St Mary, St Bon, and San Diego State from last year in basketball.
