We were at the Tournament in Hammond and it was called due to rain today so they awarded the tropheys by seeds.

Those tournaments are not "run" by USSSA. They are sanctioned by USSSA, but not run by them. Your displeasure should be directed to the tournament directors, not USSSA (at least, in this case).

Last weekend here, Saturday pool-play games were rained out... all teams were able to play their 2 pool-play games on Sunday.

No awards were given. It was simply playing for fun. No one expected a trophy (ring), no one was awarded a trophy, and everyone went home happy. And yes, it was a USSSA sanctioned tournament.

ETA: gawd damn. what a hell of a bump. I am dumbass.

He did just fine. He/we were “recruited” (still feels stupid to even type or say that) on one of these “organizations” up here that has the same name for every team.

I played baseball, and this is insane. I’ve talked to plenty of my buddies who played higher level than I, several of whom who are high school and college coaches, and ALL of them tell me it’s the dumbest shite they have ever seen. And, more importantly, all of them, universally have said it does nothing to give you an advantage in high school.

its a dumb take. times are different now. older generations didn't go through the same times that are now. Times are what they are. Yes its still important to find a team that you vibe with their same principles and dynamics of how the team is run. My son enjoys his team. They've stayed together for a few years now. They are 9 years old and play the game better than a 14 yr old rec team i remember being on. You would have thought Bregman was playing 3rd base last weekend for my kid's teams games. But no, it was just my son... 9 yrs old and all.

Look, I don't mean to be negative to you, but I have to say, your friends must be coaching some shitty high school and college baseball teams.

My son will be going to a high school with over 4,000 kids. The baseball team is consistently ranked/considered a top 50 in the country. The head coach not only encourages his players to play tournament ball in the summer and fall, he expects it (unless you are playing a different sport for the school in the fall).

The key point here is High School....not 9. I've had many discussions with college, pro and scouts. General consensus is IF your kid really loves the game/ wants to play at the next level then lessons/ travel ball might be a legitimate option around age 13.

1 pitched for the Twins for 5 years. Has openly told me that what USSSA travel teams are doing to kids is a “pandemic”. His words.

1 played at Arkansas and is in the Arkansas Baseball Hall of Fame. I coach his youngest son.

1 played at Oklahoma State. He was the Oklahoma High School coach of the year a few years ago having won back to back state titles.

We’re not talking about the same thing at all. Nothing wrong with 14+ playing tons of baseball.

There’s something very wrong with a 9 year old doing it.

Yeah? Where did you play?

I can’t find a single high level player/coach that thinks any of this is a good idea. And I have really done my homework on this.

there's a kid on our team who's father is a high school coach.

I know the Cannizaro family coaches a few young travel teams in the nola area.

What point are you trying to make? They are generalizing a system and comparing it to back in the days. Yes, good coaches have to manage kids and their arms etc. A lot of coaches are good guys and do so. Some coaches out there do not and are absolutely hurting kids.

Look, there are plenty of USSSA teams that “do it right” I’m sure. I know several.

But there are a bunch that are going to harm and/or burn out these kids.

sure. I think its the job of the parents to choose wisely what they choose to get involved with. Lumping travel ball into these type of vague and generalizing characteristics is pretty dumb. Harm to kids can be done anywhere. A kid can stick to rec ball and hurt his arm cause the dad coaches aren't wise enough to help the kid with his throwing form. We can do this shite all day long.

I think it’s just weird because, in Oklahoma, there are several very competitive non-USSSA leagues.

The USSSA leagues are absolutely psychotic. The top 2-3 teams, starting at 5-6 years old, are playing a 100 games a year. That’s tball mind you, as I’m sure you’re aware. Moore OK is the biggest culprit in my area.

There's a lot more leagues in our area than just usssa. I don't blame any of the specific leagues. I blame specific teams that may be too eccentric for different ages. Parents know damn well what they are signing up for with different teams with how coaches manage their team and schedule.

Our league is solid, and our team should kill everyone in this league. We’re looking at them as intense scrimmages.

Then we’ll play 4-5 tournaments to truly see where we are. That’s plenty of baseball, and allows kids to play other sports just fine.
