they completely screwed it up ... ... haven't read or heard anyone/anywhere who thinks they were correct in either the ruling or the way they handled it ... and though they're apologizing for the way the handled it, the bigger issue is still the way they interpreted the rule and the penalty they issued ... an object placed to the side of a ball makes the ball roll backwards instead of towards the object? ... they were going to penalize him before they even saw the video, imo ...

Since the two officials that Brandel roasted on TGC after the match were both on the course when the "incident" occurred, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they didn't see the video until DJ was probably on 9.

Pretty good analysis by John Feinstein.

Upon reflection, we regret the distraction caused by our decision to wait until the end of the round to decide on the ruling.

They handled that the worst way they possibly could. That was horrible

Tiger's fault? You might have a point if the PGA Tour wasn't taking input from Joe Smith in Ohio watching on TV.

Dottie Pepper weighs in and lays it on the USGA. I agree with her.

Naturally, the USGA’s phones started ringing because there are always people watching at home who are looking for an ‘aha!’ rules moment and Jeff Hall, the USGA’s director of rules and championships, got a call saying he might want to look at the video. Hall was on the golf course, roving, in case there was any sort of rules or pace-of-play issue.

People who call into the USGA about this shite are the worst.

I agree. The game shouldn't have to endure the shite it did Sunday afternoon.
