Mesquite Horn rips off their logo too I think. I'm guessing the Texas high schools have something figured out with them already

As do the Graham Steers.

I'm assuming as long as you don't throw their logo on there with maroon colors or make a ton of bank of merchandise with the longhorn on it you're probably good.

Wisconsin has gone after people in the past also, as well as other schools. I like the GT & Snyder KSU approach

Yeah, Wisconsin saw The Woodlands High School playing on ESPN, and not long after that The Woodlands ended up changing the format of their W.

Florida made my high school change logos. We had the exact same Gator head that they did and we had to make a new Gator head and the new one is a heck of a whole lot better than the Florida Gaytor head

The Packers, Georgia, Grambling situation is incredibly unique. Green Bay used it first and then Georgia and Grambling came up with their own, slightly different but close enough, logos and received permission from the Packers to use them.

LINK

But permission is ultimately the key here. The schools that universities come down on are ones using the logos illegally and more than likely profiting on merchandise.

They should change their logo to a uterus and call themselves the Longhorns.

You can't tell me that a high school artists or artist in the community cannot come up with a more unique logo for your school?

There's obviously something more to this because there's a high school that looks exactly like Texas. Dobie High School.

It's easier to go after out of state schools than in-state ones. Don't have to deal with any local backlash.

But it's their trademark, and the Texas schools may have reached an agreement with UT.

If you don't vigorously protect your trademarks you lose the right to protect them in the future. Universities have really stepped up on protecting their marks in the last 15 years or so. I'm surprised it took UT this long. I believe most of these High Schools were hit about 10 years ago.

Yep.

But I thought college and pro teams had a system where a high school got to copy them for a token fee of $1 a year. That way the players can feel like they're playing on a bigger stage, the logo owner gets free advertising, and the use is for a legitimate purpose instead of some random person stealing it for profit.

wonder if colleges will go after fight songs next. my hs fight song was the exact same as a pac 12 school.

every "mustang" school has the damn exact same smu/ford logo.

uga copied gb, uga improved it, and then gb copied uga.

I doubt Notre Dame will go after Catholic schools that use the Notre Dame Fight Song music.

They are just being whiny little bitches because their precious logo is colored maroon. That's the only reason.
I could understand if it was a Texas HS but it's a Mississippi HS.

no, you are just being a whiny Texas hating bitch. Lots of colleges and pro teams do this, because if they don't, then they could lose the tm and the logo goes into the public domain. If you know of a school that uses the Longhorn logo, then the either a)got permission to use it from UT b)are being sued over it c) UT doesn't know.

Wisconsin did the same thing to a HS in Texas (The Woodlands High)

That's even more unlikely, simply because of music and its ubiquity.

My HS used On, Wisconsin! (UW's fight song) for its fight song and I'm sure a significant portion of HS bands use (or at least play) college songs at its games.

I can't imagine how many schools in this state play Rocky Top.

People on here that think this is an issue exclusive to UT are retarded. I guess haters will hate.

Fight songs are different. The music is generally copyrighted, but can be purchased from sheet music retailers. Once it is purchased, you can perform it as you please. It's the same way you hear modern pop/r&b performed at HS or college football games.

Off the top of my head, in South Texas alone, I can think of a few college logos being used with color variations:

Georgia Tech
USC
Oregon
SMU
West Virginia
Wisconsin (not sure if the school still uses it)

And pro...

Broncos
Buccaneers
Cardinals
Dolphins
Eagles
Lions
Redskins

Not sure how these LA schools are getting away using the Wisconsin "W". My high school in Texas used the Wisconsin "W" and were made to change it while I was there back in 2001.

Edit: Went to Wylie, not Woodlands.
