He will fight this hard. They are tired of their softball program not getting any money.

Why would formal complaints be made?

I assume you would expect a reason to be placed on administrative leave, to this point there has been no formal complaint, is the way I read it. Odds are someone thought he was not talking to them in the way they felt they deserved so complained about him being threatening or some such thing. Just a hunch.

He, like Coach Robe, has really had to fight tooth and nail for everything the softball program has gotten and it's gotten ugly at times.

You'd think ULL would bend over backwards trying to keep him happy, being his program is about the only thing that garners positive national press for ULL. Even if it's just softball.

Lotief’s response was delivered in a statement from his attorney, John E. McElligott, Jr. The full text of the statement is:

“Approximately two weeks ago, Coach Lotief was informed that he was placed on administrative leave. We would like the softball fan base, Ragin’ Cajun supporters and the good people of Lafayette to understand that this action arises out of a passionate conversation about gender equity, between Coach Lotief and other University personnel. In this conversation, Coach Lotief raised simple issues like getting the grass cut, making sure students have an athletic trainer at practice, making sure the assistant coaches get paid and ensuring female athletes get a functional assessment before doing weight training.

“The Lotiefs have spent their university careers fighting for better opportunities for female athletes and to make sure they are afforded equitable opportunities. While no formal complaints have been made against Coach Lotief, we hope that this brings greater awareness to the issues of gender equity, and ask the community for their continued support and prayers for UL’s softball players in this difficult time.”

Lotief is one of the nation’s most successful head softball coaches. He has a career record of 729-174. This past season, his program finished 47-8 and a record 23-1 in Sun Belt play.

The Cajuns fell to LSU in the NCAA Regional finals.

He wants ULL to not be small time. Nothing crazy.

Hiding it behind "gender equity" is kind of petty. This is about funding and non-revenue generating sports.

They already have. They built a brand new stadium and just built a new state-of-the-art indoor batting facility. A lot of schools at our level don't have these type of buildings. The school has definitely been generous with the program.

On the other hand, Mike has always been known to fight tooth and nail for resources within his program. The exchange between he and those within the administration got heated to where he was put on administrative leave for a short while. Nothing more, nothing less.

I won't pretend to know more about the situation than you but why wouldn't the admin provide what he's asking for? Seems like most of it is for the girls' safety.

Mike is an attorney and he is well known to be exceedingly nice but he has a very sharp tongue. My guess is he got into an argument with admin and he "mother fricked" someone in authority so they put him in time out.

Supertigah said it best in the post above. Mike is known to be passionate, but he's also not the most politically correct.

Were he and his wife (former coach) married when she quit? It seems weird that he would take the job knowing first hand the reasons she quit. Did the administration change during that time?

Mike is a good dude, I dont know why he and his wife put up with all the BS they have through the years with the rinky dink admin at ULL.

I remember Yvette talking to us one time about how money that Alfred Lamson would donate to USL softball was getting taken by the USL admin and used for something else. So Yvette got smart and she told Lamson to go to Bell's Sporting Goods, order things off of a list she gave him, have it delivered to the Softball park and then "donate" the equipment.

I know ULL Softball is a long way away from those days in a lot of ways, but the program is still stuck in the bad old days in others

she quit to stay home with her kids and do more teaching/coaching/mentoring with individuals. They were splitting the HC salary and I think when she left he got all of the HC salary so they didn't lose anything and she got her freedom to be more involved with her own kids.

This was a pain in the arse for a lot of donations under Authement. All donations even ones that were specifically purposed from the donor had to go into the University foundation and then those different entities which were to benefit from the donations would have to request that money which had to be approved by Authement and Co.

I went to see Ken Seibold at Bell's on Johnston to order some stuff one time and there was a big pile of equipment in boxes in the corner of the warehouse. I asked him what was that, who was it for and he said that is Lamson's bi-annual donation to USL Softball

Yvette wanted the bleachers fixed at Lady Cajun Softball Park so Lamson bought the bleachers, sent out a crew, they took down the old bleachers and set up the new ones. There was a big load of scrap from the old bleachers and Yvette had to call the USL Sanitation Dept to come get it because it was University Property and they couldnt just haul it off. Good times

There's no doubt the coaches (particularly the non-football sports) have too often had to be their own advocates because the administration, both athletic and university, didn't give much of a damn.

Yvette, Robe and Lotief have all worked their asses off to raise money and improve their programs without the administration behind them. All of them are no doubt great coaches who could have left for greener pastures and deeper pockets.

No you coach a team and you want that team to be successful. You make demands that our reasonable and fight for your players.

You don't know how frustrating it is to have a university turn a blind eye to your program and let it grow stagnant because it's so focused on sports that aren't near as successful. That's the shite that runs good athletes off. I watched it happen time after time at ULM. If Lotief got suspended for standing up to the admin and fighting for his players then good on him.
