Seeing Ray Guy hand out his namesake award last night prompted this.

The Raiders' punter before Guy was pretty good himself.

What was his name?

I'll leave it to the honors system, since so many honorable people post here.

First correct answer without consulting the internet gets moved up a level on the OT baller/hot chick rating scale.

I'm going to guess George Blanda. In addition to being QB, I know he did some punting and played until he was in his 40s.

I just googled Blanda. He kicked a lot, but only punted 22 times in his career. It's probably not him. Also, he played 26 NFL seasons and was 48 when he retired!

It was not George Blanda. He was the placekicker and backup qb to Daryle Lamonica at this time.

Good guess, though.

No, the punter's name went with those pleasantly offbeat Raiders' names of the era like Otto, Lamonica, Banaszak, Biletnikoff, etc.

Jerry something DePoster? DePoyster?

He was cut because he couldn't catch a snap I think. Madden used to talk about him on broadcasts.

Yow. You are actually correct, Sms. You get the no-prize.

The reason for my surprise is, I forgot all about DePoyster, who was pretty much a journeyman who spent most of his career with the Lions.

My answer was Mike Eischeid, who punted for the Raiders for nine years, and whose best single-season avg. of 44.3 ypp was surpassed by Guy only once.

LINK

I was thinking Guy directly succeeded Eischeid, but I was wrong. DePoyster filled in for a season or two.

Congratulations for knowing more than the trivia master.

Only reason I remember him was that Madden used to mention him anytime a bobbled snap when he did CBS games. I thought the guy you mentioned was the kicker.

Wasn't the Kicker named Man or something like that with Guy in the Super Bowl?

I think the Vikings Raiders Super Bowl was last time both teams had straight on Kickers.

Errol Mann.

Ironically, also a longtime Lions' kicker before he went to the Raiders.

I have been a Rams fan for almost 50 years, but I did enjoy watching those old Raiders teams.

Ray Guy was a ridiculous athlete:

quote:

Guy also was proficient in areas other than as a punter. As a defensive back, he holds the school record for most interceptions in a season (8), is second in career interceptions (18) and is third in school history in interceptions yardage (268). As a kicker, he holds the school record for longest field goal made (61 - a then NCAA record), sixth on the school's field goals made list, and his baseball prowess, attained during a time when teams played limited schedules, continues to be prominent in the Southern Miss record books. He struck out 266 in 220.2 innings pitched, threw 14 complete games in 31 starts and is fourth in career strikeouts, though appearing in only 31 games; he was also drafted for three-straight years.

Jerry DePoyster. He used to handle kickoffs for the Raiders as well. The running joke among the season ticket holders we used to sit around was whether DePoyster would grab his crotch before kicking. If he did he would reach the end zone if not the kick would come up short.

It's kind of crazy the stupid things you can remember from when you were a kid.

Eischeid had no hang time on his punts, and he wasn't particularly quick getting his punts away. Opposing punt returners had all day to field punts and set up returns. Guy was the king of hang time, and he only had one punt blocked his entire career. Surprisingly enough that was in the Super Bowl against the Vikings.

Didn't Guy have a punt hit the top of the Astrodome?

I wonder if Ray Guy enjoys being the second best punter in Raiders history

Haven't seen DePoyster's name mentioned in years. He was Wyoming's kicker in the 1968 Sugar Bowl, where they lost to LSU 20-13. Jim Kiick, later of the Miami Dolphins, was also on that team.
