Yep.

The numbers Dan Marino put up in the era he played in are mind boggling to me.

Amen. they have just tried to make it more like a video game and I hate that brand of football. Yards, TDs and stats are so cheap now.

With the salary cap you cannot afford to have both a great offense and defense even if you want to. I just hate everything about Goodell's league

I don't mind a little bit of quarterback protection, but it's taken way overboard. If a defender attempts to strip the ball and inadvertently smacks the QB in the head, it's a 15-yard penalty. To me, cheap penalties like that ruin the momentum of a game.

It's funny because when Arena football showed up, it was made fun of by NFL fans for good reason. Then, the NFL became Arena on a bigger yard.

I think the popularity of the NFL will erode in the next decade. This Goodell-ization with the player safety rules is making the game unwatchable.

I can see what he's saying, but what do you want to do about it?

I enjoy physical football, but I don't want athletes becoming brain dead at age 50 just to fuel my Sunday afternoons. They are also protecting the quarterbacks, which is completely understandable. Nobody is paying big money to watch Ryan Mallet take on Matt Flynn, they want to see Brady and Rodgers go at it.

I guess the question I have for Dilfer is how do you fix it?

I agree. I was actually saying that it is the QB salaries that are making it impossible to field a complete team.

I hardly ever watch the NFL anymore. I used to watch just about every game that was on TV back in the 80s and 90s. The strict salary cap, player safety, and roids has ruined the game. Really have no interest at all unless the off chance the team I root for is doing well.

Don't call penalties for simply touching a WR down the field.

Bring back the uncatchable call on PI to stop bailing out offenses on crappy throws (honestly when is the last time you saw this called?)

Officials are asked to make judgement calls every play yet if your pinky grazes the QB's helmet it's a 15 yard penalty. Let them use common sense here.

Call more offensive PI. If a DB can't touch the WR at all, it should go the other way as well.

Great suggestions. They improve the game without jeopardizing safety.

Definitely more offensive PI

Well how would you fix the product?

You can't. Supposedly part of the problem is the players have gotten so much bigger, stronger and faster. Some of that is PEDs, but enough of it can be had naturally that there really isn't much you can do but change the rules to try and limit the worst types of collisions.

The only real fix is the NFL giving up more of the record revenue to take care of broken and battered players, even if it comes in the form of forcing player salary into some health/retirement plan. Continually research the injury side of the game and be very transparent about it. Anyone playing knows what they signed up for and should be mostly taken care of after they leave the game. Problem solved. But we all know that they're too greedy to do the reasonable thing.

Evidence of why Trent Dilfer isn't an entrepreneur of business and just some dude trying to get ratings. They already did the old way of hitting QBs full force with minimal rules, and the consequences are evident. The reason why changes are here is b/c these so called "Tough" players are the ones driving it with their cases. But I understand how people in the comfort of their living room say these rules are bad b/c they definitely don't have the whole picture. The game is much more violent today due to the speed size athleticism of the players, sorry if your mind is too slow to keep up the rules

Not to mention a lot of the old players calling newer players pussies are the same ones who are in that lawsuit against the NFL. They are the reason it is like it is. I'm not saying that's Dilfer, but how can some of these players say the game isn't violent enough anymore and then file suit against the NFL for injury?

Been growing more and more disinterested in the NFL within the past 4-5 years. Maybe it's because the Saints won the SB, I don't know. I agree the product isn't what it was 10 years ago, IMO. You can't do anything to an offensive player without their notarized permission slip.

typical attacking the msngr...... There are many reasons for the change in rules, we get that. We don't like the affects on the field, therefore we are losing interest. Sorry your mind is too slow to keep up with that.

It will never go back pre goodell style, but they could make rule changes to help defenses.

Two rules I would change:

1. change the illegal contact rule from 5 yards to 10 yards.

2. Eliminate Face guarding pass interference. As long as they do not make contact they should be allowed to face guard or not have to look back for the ball.
