I'm fine with Tyrann Mathieu being on the list. He was an incredible talent. I hate that his career was cut short. He was incredible.

Fournette? Absolutely not. As mentioned earlier, Mike Rozier should be on there. As a simple statistical comparison:

quote:

Fournette
2014: 187 carries for 1,034 yards (5.5 avg) 10 tds.
2015: 271 carries for 1,953 yards (6.4 avg) 22 tds.
2016: 129 carries for 843 yards (6.5 avg) for 8 tds.
Career: 616 carries for 3,830 yards (6.2 avg) 40 tds.

Rozier
1981: 151 carries for 943 yards (6.2 avg) 5 tds.
1982: 242 carries for 1,689 yards (7.0 avg) 15 tds.
1983: 275 carries for 2,148 yards (7.8 avg) 29 tds.
Career: 668 carries for 4,780 yards (7.2 avg) 49 tds.

On a side note, how was Kam Chancellor at Virginia Tech? He's an incredible pro-talent, but I don't remember too much about him at VT.

Why should Fournette not be on this list????

Two Wisconsin runners (Ron Dayne & Melvin Gordon) belong on this list before Leonard Fournette.

Against much better defenses than Rozier played against and the 1983 Nebraska offense was one of best in history....

The early 80s Huskers played weaker SOS than the mid-2010s Tigers, however Rozier has the Heisman and gaudier stats over Fournette.

He may have better stats overall but you have to take those SEC defenses into consideration..... but that's fine that he is not in the list...... h-town is right , I would put Faulk on before Fournette.

Ty Detmer > Doug Flutie

Detmer left BYU as the NCAA career leader in attempts, completions, yards, TDs, total offense, total TDs, and passer rating. 59 NCAA records, according to wiki.

His signature win over Miami is one of my favorite games ever.

I'm not into comparing 1980s defenses with mid 2010 defenses. It's a top 50 players of the past 50 years. Rozier's stats are better. As for Fournette, teams were able to effectively shut him down. Looking at his losses while at LSU:

2014
7 rushes for 38 yards (Mississippi State)
10 rushes for 42 yards (Auburn)
21 rushes for 79 yards (Alabama)
5 rushes for 9 yards (Arkansas)
11 rushes for 143 yards (Notre Dame)

2015
19 rushes for 31 yards (Alabama)
19 rushes for 91 yards (Arkansas)
25 rushes for 108 yards (Ole Miss)

2016
23 rushes for 138 yards (Wisconsin)
16 rushes for 101 yards (Auburn)
17 rushes for 35 yards (Alabama)
12 rushes for 40 yards (Florida)

I can't ignore the utter domination Alabama had against him as well. Nebraska played some tough teams during that run. Just off the top of my head, they went to Happy Valley in 1982 and lost by a field goal to national champion Penn State. And of course, the 1983 Orange Bowl (31-30 Miami) in which...
quote:

Rozier had 138 yards on 21 carries at halftime against a Miami Hurricanes team with the second ranked defense in football, but he had to leave in the third quarter following an ankle injury. Rozier finished the game with 147 yards on 26 carries

Ok. But to be fair the style of offense has a lot to do in the differences in these numbers, plus in most cases of the lake of production of Fournette was his offensive coaches and head coach....

Let's be honest here, Fournette did gain 1,953 yards in 2015 despite those 3 dismal games setting the school single-season record. Shouldn't be diminished, that's an impressive feat.

List is trash without

Rocket Ismail
Pat Fitzgerald
Michael Crabtree
Peter Warrick
Luke Kuechly
Ron Simmons
Jack Ham
or Chris Zorich

Rocket was the first that came to mind for me, too, especially if they have Deion Sanders so high. Rocket was Reggie Bush-like in college.

I mean, I don't see how a program with three titles (and a fourth if you extend the time period a year) doesn't have at least one player on a list like this.

Tim Brown, Joe Montana, Joe Theismann, Jerome Bettis, Ricky Watters, Zorich, Ross Browner, Bob Crable, Dave Casper, etc. could all be on there. Alan Page should definitely been in the top half of any list like this if it was stretched one more year.

He had one decent but unremarkable season, one phenomenal season, and one atrocious season where he quit as soon as team fell out of NC contention. He had an extremely underwhelming college career relative to the hype that surrounded him. He's not in the top 10,000 college football players of the past 50 years. He had talent and showed flashes of his potential but a number of factors make one say "meh."

Fournette isn't in the top 50 backs of the past 50 years, much less top 50 players

None of my prior posts argued for his inclusion in the top 50 for 50, he was not as dominant a college player as Alexander or Faulk who outgained him and hold more accolades. Still 1,953 is quite an impressive stat regardless of how anyone may spin it.

He could easily name 50 or more running backs that had better, more consistent careers. Two of his three seasons were not very good. I'm sure you'll make a lot of excuses, but ultimately his career was just ordinary.
