I just watched it. Good grief. My family are Bucs fans, and they wonder why I pull for the Braves.

They are wasting what is the most beautiful park in MLB.

YOUTUBE - CLOSE CALL SPORTS

This is a breakdown from an umpire-centric channel, these guys are pretty knowledgeable of the WRITTEN rules.

**ETA: Just before this chain of stupidity, the Pirates botched a pickoff play at first which got the runner to second. Just one bad play after another.

Look in the replys for the guy that's joking about being a little league ump. Hes funny as shite and people think hes serious. People fall for sarcasm or just ridiculous statements that are obviously jokes.
Dudes saying shite like ,when hes the ump for little league, they are in his world lol
Hes saying shite like he throws kids out the game for looking at him sideways..its frickin hillarious.

Great breakdown. Good call on possible obstruction on Craig had Javy not reached.

Looked like javy even got lost in the craziness of him throwing for a sec then he realized “I still gotta go to first...oh shite nobody is there”

What no one is asking about this play... is where was the Pirates 2B when Baez hustled back to first?

Someone on Reddit asked if this was possible 5 years ago. Some of the replies are hilarious in hindsight

LINK

quote:

There really will never be a rundown between first base and home plate.

The batter always has a force-out at first, so a defender would just throw the ball to first to get the out.

quote:

And they throw home and get the out... this would work zero times in MLB. The answer is just NO.

shite, they could throw it to first and back to home well before the runner could from third could get home... I have no idea what the thought behind the question is.

quote:

How high are you right now?

quote:

All the defense has to do is tag firstbase.

Probably halfway to the dugout because the inning should have been over.

MLB Network crew just pointed out that the chaos of this play was due in good part to the home plate umpire making the safe signal at home, when the runner was not actually safe (the runner's status is unknown until the outcome of the batter's plate appearance is determined)

Saw this on Twitter. Still boneheaded obviously, but it’s an interesting note about it

Him making the safe sign for Contreras then realizing he still needed to get to first is hilarious.

That's dumb, the umpire has to call safe or out there, if he's out at the plate then the inning is over regardless of the out at first.

This was the follow up to a similar question

quote:

the rules don't say what he should do but the rules say he shouldn't give the safe signal unless the runner has achieved the base to which he is entitled, and he's not entitled until the batter reaches first safely
