Experts expect that between $60 and $80 million worth of bets will be placed on the match in the state of Nevada by the time the fighters touch gloves Saturday night.

quote:

That's double the amount of money ever been wagered on any previous boxing match, said Jay Rood, the VP of Race and Sports at MGM Grand, where the fight will be held.

quote:

Prior to this, a 2013 fight between Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez in 2013 was the biggest in terms of bets, with about $25 million riding on that bout, Rood said.

Most of these people don't really like boxing... they like "big events". They like spectacles.

People will tune in who don't give two shits about boxing.

Boxing is dead.

This fight proves it. It is the only fight that anyone has cared about in a decade or more.

It is dead.

Lol dude I grew up watching every big fight and I love the sport, but the most bet on match ever is an awful argument for why the sport isn't dying.

Did you know that the Vegas Sportsbooks just had their most profitable April ever? Didn't have anything to do with boxing, probably the fact that sports betting is much more mainstream.

Sadly , boxing is dead to many American fans.
I grew up on boxing and never lost my love for the sport. A big fight like tonight still makes me giddy and anxious and fired up. Almost as good as a Saturday in the fall...ALMOST! Hahahha

In my opinion the lack of following or decrease in fandom in the states is due to the decline of the heavyweight devision.
Americans love the big , powerful , knockout potential fights, but I haven't enjoyed that division since the 90's.
Heavyweights are the least skilled fighters in boxing..slow, sloppy, poor skills, lack of endurance , lack of speed and footwork. Just bad in my opinion. Outside of Wilder, I don't even watch heavyweights anymore.

BUT there are some fantastic welters and middles. There are some fighters between 140-160lbs that are electric and entertaining as any other era in boxing!
Manny, Floyd, Keith "One Time"Thurman, Mathyse, Canelo, GGG, Bradley, Provodnikov, Garcia, Cotto, at one time Sergio Martinez, Khan, Brook, Ward (although he's disappeared), etc...

If you once enjoyed boxing , give it another chance!

Anticipated 3 million PPV buys says otherwise.
At $100 a pop no less.
Many of these will be parties and let's not forget the bar room crowd and closed circuit views.

You say no one will watch ...maybe so , except the 50 million or so that will in various venues globally. Hell, its probably closer to 100 million globally. I don't know for sure , but this fight is historical and is being recognized as such by knowledable sports fans.

Not to mention the arrival of MMA, which bores me in a similar fashion as some of you seem to be bored by boxing.
I think MMA strikes a chord with males between the ages of 15-40 because so many dudes think they can do it hahahahhaa
Tons of bar room brawlers and Billy Badasses identify with some good ole ground and pound and of course the Affliction and Tapout apparel is just a bonus hahahaha
Just two separate schools of thought in my opinion.
Boxing is classic and timeless..it's the sweet science.
MMA is geared towards today's mindset. It lacks the charisma and charm or even the sophistication (dare I use that word to describe such a primitive sport, but boxing can truly show you the heart, spirit , strength and bare the soul of a man) that boxing has the ability to showcase.

More people gamble now and EVERYBODY can gamble now. You don't need a shady bookie. You can just use your phone.

If Leonard/Duran, Hagler/Hearns or Ali/Foreman was during the Internet Era, the gambling money would DWARF what we are seeing.
