I think a lot of the fighters in the NHL aren't considered thugs because there are rules to the fighting. No third man in, if a guy goes down it's over, don't leave the bench, clear any equipment out of the way, only fight guys that want to fight, etc.

I suppose if you want there to be. The OT isn't exactly in touch with the rest of the country
It obviously is exaggerated, but I don't think it's that far out of touch with what a whole bunch of people in our country are thinking, willing to say on a message board, but would never actually say the same stuff in real life situations.

I'm asking why

I am sorry this has gone on for 4 pages without someone actually telling you why it is part of North American Hockey.

Hockey is a very physical game where hits can become dirty. fighting keeps those dirty hits into the boards in check and prevents them from getting out of control. aka a 4th liner is going to step in and fight a guy gunning for the his team's 1st line scorer

counter argument of NFL being more physical: A single play in the NFL lasts about 10 seconds and then there is a new down (aka reset) during that reset both sides go to their sides of the Line of Scrimage. So although more physical, there is a break to cool the bones to where fighting is unimportant.

counter argument of Eurpopean hockey doesn't have a culture of fighting: European hockey plays in a rink that is 20feet wider which makes for a less physical game.

It's a culture thing.

Canadians by far do not care as much about fighting in hockey because they are used to it. Every so often it comes up that hockey shouldn't have fighting and its largely ignored or nothing comes of it.

Americans are falling over reasons to sue each other and come up with the next big social issue. Biggest sports have some fighting? Better complain to every national source possible. ESPN doesn't help, every so often they like to go on the moral crusade and push some topic.

It's part of the game and they are called goons, no comparison whatsoever.

A better question is why bench clearing brawls in baseball don't garner the same outrage as an nba fight.

It'll be interested to see if this secret Dez Bryant video ever surfaces. Supposedly its significantly worse than the Ray Rice video; have a feeling that won't be the case.

This pretty much nails it. There is a code of conduct for fights in the NHL. When fights occur in other sports, they're just brawls. I'd be interested in seeing a setup where an offensive lineman could square off with a defensive lineman one on one for a dirty hit on the QB. It will never happen though.

I wish this board could be Canadian for a day so we could see the weekly melt due to the antics of P.K. Subban.

Kind of a racist thing to assume. This board would love the shite out of PK. There's literally nothing to hate about him. He works his nuts off on the ice, stays out of trouble, and is probably the most awesome player in the league.

Why can hockey players beat the shite out of each other but other players are thugs in different sports?
The correct answer is because the game is intense and the players are carrying what is potentially a deadly weapon. They are allowed to drop the sticks and duke it out, usually when calls are missed by refs and the players therefore take it into their own hands. There are rules and repercussions in hockey fighting. It's not just a thug free for all.

...oh yeah, it sells tickets too.
