New Coke was successful. It served its devised and intended crappy taste purpose in re-invigorating regular old Coke as it was losing to Pepsi. So regular old boring coke became -
CLASSIC! and people clamored for it again.

2008 Detroit Tigers
They were coming off an 88 win season the previous season and a WS berth two years before. They traded for Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria to add to an already stacked lineup with Pudge Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, Placido Polanco, Curtis Granderson and Gary Sheffield. Everybody was predicting them to score 1000+ runs and just destroy the American League. What could possibly wrong? Well, their pitching for one. Leyland rode their starting pitchers hard to get to the World Series in 2006 and it caught up to them in 2008. Bonderman only pitched 70 innings, Nate Robertson completely collapsed, Verlander had the worst season of his career and Father Time finally caught up to Kenny Rogers. They also had the worst bullpen in the American League. None of their relievers had a WHIP under 1.35. Also while their offense was pretty good, it didn't live up to the lofty preseason expectations. It all added up to a 74-88 season and one of the most disappointing baseball teams in recent memory.
