Enjoying the faster games! I don't have to worry about 3 and 1/2 hour games

I looked up at the end of the 5th inning of the Braves/Cardinals game and realized only 1 hour and 15 minutes had elapsed. The game overall took 2 hours and 20 minutes. It's staggering.

Yea I was skeptical but im really liking this so far. Catch myself watching way more games now. Just hope they move the extra innings rules back to normal now that theyve solved the main issues effecting game times.

Only downside will be teams hiking concession prices even higher due the fans being in the stadiums for less time.

I'm guessing ticket prices won't reflect this either.

I like it. Would be even better if they reduced the time between innings but I know that can’t happen

What do you consider "old?"

Average game times

1950: 2:21
1960: 2:38
1970: 2:34
1980: 2:38

2023: 2:38

Sure, it kind of sucks that it’s not conventional but it was a much needed change for fans like me.

And fans like me don't like the rules, and didn't mind the pace before. People will look for new reasons to whine about baseball being too slow. I'd like for people to leave sports alone, and find something else to do if they have that little patience.

left handed batters should run to third base after contact. Science

I feel like the 2 throw to first rule is going to be a huge advantage. Like game changing.

Young people love it because their Ritalin-addled brains can't grasp the strategies and nuances of a thinking game. If it doesn't move at the flash-bang speed of ESPN clips the mind wanders.

Baseball was played at a much faster pace before Ritalin was invented.

I was listening to Theo Epstein on the Ryen Russillo podcast and he said that with the evolution of pitching (everyone seemingly throwing 95+ with wicked sliders) and analytics dictating that singles and stolen bases aren’t nearly as valuable as swinging for the fences at all times the average time between a ball is in play was over 4 minutes.

That’s a long freaking time to have virtually no action happening except pitching. It’s boring and is a huge change from the way baseball was played as recently as 10-15 years ago.

The new rules are almost universally favored by players, managers, and fans alike.

Yeah because there is so much strategy and nuance to power pitching for strikeouts and only swinging for the fences every pitch and never adjusting your approach based on balls and strikes or players on base.

I wonder how the deadball era from 1900-1920 would be received by fans today…

Did the dead ball era limit home runs only or did it limit batters from putting the bat in the ball all together? Because the latter is what the destigmatization of strikeouts has done

The ball didn't fly off the bat in the deadball era. The best hitters were those who, to steal a famous quote, hit it where they ain't. The ballparks were also very large and the balls would also get dirty and hard to see from the box, as they weren't replaced for damn near anything but losing them in the stands.

There's no doubt the pitching wasn't as good, and there were also some dudes who could smack it (Tris Speaker was said to hit absolute laser line drives).

All that changed in about 1919.

Only 2 pick off attempts per base runne

I'm not a big baseball guy so I knew about the pitch clock but didn't know abotu this one.

Probably a stupid quesiton, but if a pitcher does make 2 pickoff attempts on a guy, wouldn't he just automatically get to steal ont eh next pitch? I mean he can take an enormous lead since he knows there's no pickoff attempt coming, it's practically giving him a free base.

Banning the shift was stupid

I've seen a bunch of situations where the shift totally didn't work, and an easy ground ball went for a base hit scoring a run..

If they want to play it, let them take the risk.

Stolen bases are WAY up.

More a product of the pitch clock and pickoff rules than the bases being bigger.

Not quite. The rule allows for the pitcher to pick a third time, but he must record an out in doing so. If he doesn't, a balk is called. So a guy can't just get a 20-foot lead because he can still be picked off.
