True. This would have marked the first time in history a player and/or coach retired after winning a championship even though they had more time to play at a high level.

I love this board. Freak out when Lebron may take 21 million instead of 23, but are ecstatic when Duncan/ginobli/parker get paid in ding dongs, twinkies, and devil cremes

So true.

Lebron takes paycut to make better team=pussy. Duncan/ginobli/parker playing for less then they can get=team players doing it the right way

Duncan was making about 20 mill a year from 06-12. Not sure how much more he could have taken than that. Another big difference here, Tim Duncan is 38 years old. He's not in his prime, he needs more help. Manu is also pretty old.

Not saying Lebron is a pussy if he takes a massive paycut, but I don't think its good for basketball.

Duncan decision coming, and here's an option I'm hearing: Opts out and signs a 2-year deal that both lowers payroll and rewards him.

To me the question is what does that last part mean. It's kinda ambiguous. They can't pay him in a way that doesn't go against the cap, so the reward is...what? Do they just mean a big pay cut in year one and then a super backloaded year two?

What am I missing. TIA

LeBron takes pay cut in his prime - forms a super team with 2 other players in their prime and having them take pay cuts as well.

Duncan takes a pay cut past his prime - keeps core players that are also past their primes.

big difference is that those 3 were guys that commanded max contracts and took pay cuts to make a super team in their collective primes. Duncan took a pay cut because no one is gonna give him a 2yr/45mil contract at the age of 38.
