So in case any of you don't know, in 2005 ESPN decided to have Steve Phillips, one of their MLB analysts and former Mets GM, to go on camera and basically pretend to be the GM of a bunch of different MLB teams and participate in a "mock" press conference. See Deadspin link below:

It was every bit as bad as it sounds and, in my opinion, is the moment ESPN stopped being the ESPN of my youth and became the joke that it is today.

When did they start doing video game simulations of big games?

You should restrict your viewership of ESPN to live sporting events only. That's what I do.

Pretty much this or when you're bored and want some white noise (and then you just need to laugh at 90% of the shite said).

This was so hilariously bad. Also Steve Phillips eventually fricked some intern and got fired

Even 11 years later still have no clue what that was all about.

Steve Phillips then presumably took some women out for a tasteful dinner at a place like Boston Market and made unwanted advances.

The two things I remember from that gawd awful "who's now" segment:

1. The T.I. song

2. Kirk Herbstreit arguing that Matt Leinart was going to have a bigger impact on American sports than Tiger Woods (TW circa 2006 mind you)

Now they're doing weekly bachelorette updates, it's safe to say they've hit the rocks.

I can't place a date on it, but it was essentially after Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman made Sportscenter at 10PM must watch TV based not just on getting to watch the day's sports highlights but because of their personalities. They were great at it and when they were doing it they were kind of pioneers at it.

What ensued was ESPN hiring to fit that mold and it set off a string of events where EVERY frickING SPORTSCASTER all across the country began thinking they had to be a damned comedian to be interesting when playing sports highlights. So not only did ESPN start stocking their desks with asshats like that, but guys who were not talented enough to ever get the call from ESPN began to be what you'd see on locals...and HOLY frick you can still see the results of that.

As soon as ESPN realized they could sell their anchors as entertainment and idiots would tune in for that regardless of how many actual sports highlights they showed, the channel began to suck for me and I now will only watch live events because of it.
