The Bulls/Thibs situation could get extremely caustic

Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry, a respected offensive coach, is among the names on the Bulls' radar. But sources say Gentry -- and anyone else not named Hoiberg -- will have to pass a difficult litmus test that includes not only being the right fit, but also dynamic enough to justify letting Thibodeau out of his deal.
"What is Tom going to do, be angry?" another front office source said. "What's different about that?"
Front office sources believe that if Hoiberg could be had, the Bulls would jump at the opportunity to then leverage the other head coaching openings -- New Orleans, Denver and Orlando, at the moment -- to extract draft-pick compensation for Thibodeau. But one thing the Bulls won't do, according to league sources, is let Thibodeau out of his contract for compensation without knowing they have a replacement who excites them.
"That ain't happening," one of the people said.
The point is, most people wrestling with how and when the Thibodeau divorce with the Bulls happens are getting the variables backwards. First comes the replacement, then the compensation talks for the embattled -- and in demand -- Thibodeau.

So the Bulls are basically looking for his replacement. IF they find one (one of the guys they want), the won't fire Thibs...they'll hold on to him and try to trade him so they don't have to pay him even though they have found his replacement. If they don't find a guy they want, they will just hold on to him: with him knowing they were actively interviewing for his replacement.
That is some crazy, backasswards shite by the Bulls FO.
I can't imagine how awkward that would be next year.

Is anyone really surprised? Reinsdorf kicked Phil out the door years ago.

They should let MJ be GM and he can turn the whole thing around.

And if you are a possible candidate and see what they are doing to Thibs, why on earth would you expect anything different?

Pels shouldn't want Thibs.

I don't want to make this a Pels thread, its not about that.
I was just commenting on what a weird situation. The Bulls ownership/FO has always been assholes, but...damn.

Day one on the job he trades Derrick Rose & Pau Gasol to the Hornets for a 2nd round pick.

The NBA really needs to make a rule on coach trades because it just seems so awkward to me

Nola has no draft picks, so theyre out.

This has turned into the Harbaugh situation in the NBA.

Have a 2nd
I really don't think it'll get to that point. I don't see why the bulls just don't fire him. Why would he work someplace that he's basically being held hostage?
ETA: its better for both parties to part mutually ala harbaugh.

Is this a subtle bragging thread of using the vocabulary word caustic?

Also, why would any team trade for him when you know he isn't worth anything to the Bulls?

I don't see anyway people actually trade draft picks for Thibs. Hopefully we just hire Hoiberg first and leave the Bulls sitting there looking like idiots.
Can Thibs just resign and have his pick of what job he wants?

"we want to fire him, but you'll have to pay us to take him off our hands." Oh ok
What coach is going to want to walk into such a toxic situation? It looked bad enough just wanting to oust despite his resume. Now you're actively looking for his replacement, but leaving him limbo while other teams are trying to fill vacancies. Yeah what coach wouldn't find that appealing?

If he doesn't want the $9 million Chicago still owes him. That's what this is all about.

But if he knows he'll get hired by us or Orlando that wouldn't really matter, right? I guess Chicago would have to pay the difference in the salaries, but how much would that realistically be?

Thibs is a good coach, but in no way is he worth trading draft picks for imo. I don't think I would trade anything for a coach other than like John Salmons.
This is bizarre and the Bulls front office is full of themselves.
